we really went from these crazy detailed oil painting backgrounds in TLOK to something that looks like it’s made for preschoolers
Can we take a moment to admire this backgrounds? This new art style looks amazingg #sevenhavens

to be clear this is not a bash to the animators or the new studio but just paramount/avatar studios direction of this franchise

Maybe they wanted to make a brighter palette cause the main protagonists are 9 year olds idkk

The bright colour palette isn’t really new for Avatar though, the quality just seems far from what it used to be

The backgrounds are genuinely one of thew few things I like . Its a different style but still looks nice. Im more disappointed by the general art direction

artstyle/background is definitely subjective but its just a big shift from ATLA and LOK, and its also not helping that the animation took a step back aswell

The clear attempt to age down the franchise with the younger protagonists, brighter colors and more generic, Voltron-y designs is unfortunate

They're not oil paintings. They're digital paintings. But the technique is similar, with a lot of broad strokes and blocks of color, so your point is well-taken. The new art direction is a significant downgrade.

This series was definitely for temu ad and paramount mistakenly bought it

The new series look is clearly inspired by Moebius. The creators don't want the franchise to get stagnated. That's why each show feels and looks different, with different cultures as reference.

Seven Havens looks very much inspired by Moebius' artwork, which is, on a technical level, extremely impressive and very beautiful. Having a stripped back environment for a post apocalyptic world makes sense imo

Eh as much as I dislike a lot of the overall generalized art direction of the new series I disagree about the preschooler coloring: if these bright Moebius inspired choices were grounded by say real Moroccan, Middle Eastern or Mediterranean cultural motifs then it would work.

It's inspired by one of the greats, Moebius. Maybe chill on the negativity until you watch the show

It has the energy of an anime that only exists to sell a trading card game.

this season's entire art direction is inspired by the famous french artist Moebius, without a doubt. I can't believe it... I'm obsessed.... oh my god

I feel like you couldve said you preferred the old art without indirectly bashing the artists and saying the art looks like its for preschoolers…the new art is beautiful and very up my alley, it is simpler for sure, and you can prefer the old style but still be respectful abt it

You’re just hating for no reason at this point, the backgrounds look great, just a different style and vibe, try appreciating something for it’s value instead of always comparing (I love how you compared it with totk tho, totk needs love)

There should be a standard for content ratings, if you’re over the intended age, the state can imprison you for nitpicking on twitter. By all means criticize it in essay format but twitter you get life in prison

I feel like one of the big things people hated about Korra is how they stripped the four nations identities and merged everything together and made everything futuristic and just nation colour coded, so obviously they went further down that route because the fans hated it.

The new style is obviously inspired by Moebius, one of the greatest illustrators of all time

"Made for preschoolers" is crazy I like the old background art so much more but people always push things way too far on here.

The visual downgrade debate is fair, but nostalgia is doing some heavy lifting here.

Everything looks so flat!!! I don’t love painting backgrounds, but I feel the need to touch these; they feel so unfinished, no depth, no shadow, no reflections, no textures 💀

Theyre oil painted styled since the backgrounds were made digitally.

Right? Korra scenes were gorgeous :3 With this new show they targeted kids not old Avatar fans sadly.
