Russian commanders are being fed a frontline that differs from the one their soldiers are dying on. We already saw Z-blogger Anatoliy Radov admit that the official line of contact used by the Vostok grouping differs from reality by up to 12 km, and that troops are being sent to objectives based on a line that is 4 km behind Ukrainian positions. You get columns driving into kill zones they were told were safe. The 5,000 km² gap is a measure of how much Moscovia has to invent to keep the war looking like a slow victory. It also measures how much Ukrainian counterpressure is being erased from the picture. The real front is not where their maps say it is. And the gap keeps growing.

In 1999, russia committed at the OSCE Istanbul summit to withdraw its remaining forces from Moldova by the end of 2002. It did not. In 2003, russia signed a treaty formally establishing and recognising the russia-Ukraine state border. In 2008, russia accepted the six-point Georgia ceasefire requiring russian forces to withdraw to the positions they held before hostilities.
