This week, more than 70 Team NS volunteers joined Operation Lifesaver and our fellow railroaders for rail crossing safety blitzes in Atlanta, Birmingham, Chicago, Cleveland and Pittsburgh. Together, we shared rail safety information with drivers to reinforce a simple but important message: safe choices at crossings and around trains and tracks can save lives. Whether it's a daily commute or heading out on a road trip, a few extra seconds can make all the difference. From engineers and conductors to mechanical, engineering, operations, agricultural, and customer logistics teams, it takes thousands of railroaders working together to move America's harvest across our network. From tank car identification to response strategies, these free trainings help equip local heroes with the skills they need to stay prepared and safe— while building strong relationships between our teams along the way. Congratulations to Sam Niness, retired President of Triple Crown Services, on receiving the Intermodal Association of North America's (@Intermodal) 2026 Silver Kingpin Award, one of the intermodal industry's most prestigious honors. The Silver Kingpin Award recognizes individuals whose contributions have had a significant impact on the growth and advancement of intermodal freight transportation. For Norfolk Southern, Sam's legacy is closely tied to the success of both Thoroughbred Direct Intermodal Services and Triple Crown Services. Throughout his career, he continually sought new ways to innovate, improve the customer experience and advance how freight moves across the intermodal network. He later led the integration of the two businesses under the Triple Crown name, helping position the organization for continued success. Over more than four decades in transportation, Sam helped move the industry forward through innovation, collaboration and a relentless focus on serving customers. What you're seeing isn't a video game. It's a part of the NS network through the lens of LiDAR technology. LiDAR, which stands for Light Detection and Ranging, captures millions of data points to create detailed 3D maps of our railroad. That gives our teams a clearer view of the network so they can plan better, work smarter and operate more safely: bit.ly/4hfSkqe. The data is collected using LiDAR drones and mobile vehicles across the network. Our railroaders use it to: 🚂 Planning: Supports engineering design, construction projects, infrastructure assessments and digital twin modeling. 🛤️ Maintenance: Helps monitor track conditions, structures, clearances and other assets across the network. 🌳 Vegetation management: Identifies vegetation near the railroad so teams can prioritize maintenance and support safe operations. 🚨Emergency response: Provides detailed mapping and analysis that can support recovery efforts and severe weather assessments. Behind every point cloud, map and digital model is a team of railroaders who collect the data and transform it into insights we can use to keep freight safely rolling across the network! Honoring 9/11 Through Service 🇺🇸 On this national day of service and remembrance, Team NS took part in the @911day Meal Packing events held across more than 50 cities. In Atlanta, 50 of our team members worked alongside more than 600 volunteers at the @cfbhall to pack over 356,000 meals for families facing hunger. These meals will be distributed through the @ACFB, supporting pantries and food banks across the region. We’re proud to partner with the 9/11 Day organization in honoring lives lost 25 years ago through meaningful service— turning a tragic day in our history into one of unity. 👏 Shout out to our railroaders at Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona, PA, for reaching a major safety milestone: one MILLION work hours injury free: bit.ly/3UDeMBR In one of the world's largest locomotive repair facilities, where over 475 railroaders perform complex repairs using heavy equipment and specialized tools, this achievement reflects the focus, expertise and commitment the team brings to the shop every day. The work done at Juniata is central to maintaining our fleet through major repairs, component rebuilds and modernization projects that extend the life of locomotives and return them to service across the network. This milestone belongs to the skilled railroaders who make it all possible: the machinists, electricians, sheet metal workers, boilermakers, carmen, firemen and oilers, clerks, and many others who support our operations.
