🐴 NYCLASS works to to end carriage horse abuse and gain legal protections for all animals through legislative action and activism.📣

New York City
“The plan was to rove the Park and document infractions. As we headed out, she pointed to lines of waiting carriages. “No one is taking rides,” she said. “That’s part of a larger trend around the world, that horse-drawn carriages are an obsolete business model. San Antonio, Texas, even voted to ban carriages. Chicago, Philadelphia, Mumbai, Barcelona. New York City’s actually kind of an outlier.” From a hilltop, we peered down at the Park’s West Drive, which was packed. “You can see how easy it is for frightening stimuli to spook a horse,” Birnkrant said. Horses are prey animals, she explained, and their instinct is to run.”
After a young tourist was killed in a Central Park carriage accident this summer, the City Council is considering whether to ban horse-drawn carriages forever. newyorker.com/magazine/2026/…

BREAKING: The New Yorker magazine takes an in-depth look at NYC’s horse carriage crisis: the tragic death of 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan, repeated violent crashes involving spooked and runaway horses, and horse deaths that expose the devastating toll of this cruel, obsolete business that is increasingly disappearing from cities around the world. Published today, the article explores the history of horse carriages and NYCLASS’s decades of work to end this deadly cruelty—and how close we are to finally ending it. Now is the time to pass Romanch’s Law (Intro 943), named in honor of Romanch Mahajan. Use the link in our bio to send an automatic email urging your City Council member to co-sponsor and pass this lifesaving legislation. Let’s ban horse carriages this year (Year of the Horse!) and retire the horses to waiting sanctuaries where they can finally run free. 🐴

ANOTHER horse-drawn carriage has flipped over and crashed, this time in San Antonio, TX. How many crashes will it take? Horses do NOT belong hauling tourists through busy city streets! This is just another reason why NYC needs to step up and pass the ban NOW. peta.vg/48yn

Replying to @NYCMayor
@NYCMayor @NYCCouncil: New Yorkers want horse carriages ended. We need a vote before another life is lost. ⬇️Urge NYC Council to schedule a vote and pass Romanch’s Law: nyclass.org/StopHorseAbuse
Even after 18-year-old Romanch Mahajan was killed in June trying to save his mother’s life, carriage drivers are STILL abandoning horses in violation of law, showing reckless disregard for life and safety. A New Yorker sent us this video from yesterday’s Manhattan rush hour. @NYCMayor @NYCCouncil: New Yorkers want horse carriages ended. BREAKING — A horse carriage tipped over today in San Antonio. Wherever there are horse carriages in urban environments, there are dangerous situations that put the lives of the horse and the public at risk. San Antonio ALREADY banned the carriages to be phased out by 2030, but until then we risk tragedy every single day. New York MUST be next to ban the carriages, and get rid of them off the streets as soon as possible. ➡️Use the link in our bio to send a message directly to your City Council member urging them to vote for Romanch’s Law. Tell @nycmayor to move the bill forward quickly. We cannot wait for another horse or person to die.

Here’s to compassion and grace, the compassion we show one another and the compassion we extend to all living things. So much unnecessary suffering in the animal kingdom is caused by our waste, our debris, our indifference. We should never forget that our lives are interwoven with the lives of the creatures with whom we share this planet. Their fate and ours are connected. And yet, even amid so much loss, there are people who care. People working on solutions. And people like this man, who simply saw a living creature in distress and jumped into the water to help. Never underestimate such small acts of kindness. Compassion for the vulnerable, whether human or animal, reveals something powerful about our humanity. May we see more of this. May we be more like this. op: @sassymediatv

I just finished an advance copy of @casssunstein's "Animals Matter," about animal rights, and it's excellent. I particularly admire his effort to craft a practical bill of rights for animals. Germany has amended its constitution to protect animals, so who's next?
Galleys have arrived!

I love @SecRollins' ambition to Make America Humane Again. Here are seven things she could do to make good on it: 1. Withdraw her support for the Save Our Bacon Act, which would force states to sell pork from crated pigs. 2. Restore enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act -- the USDA now has fewer than 100 inspectors for 17,500 labs, zoos, and breeders combined. 3. Withdraw her Administration's lawsuit to force Michigan to sell eggs from caged hens. 4. Implement the Horse Protection Rule against soring — deliberately injuring horses' legs — which she has now delayed three times. 5. Withdraw her plan to eliminate any cap on kill line speeds at pork plants, which increases the risk that pigs are still conscious when killed. 6. Stop paying indemnities to egg producers who cook their birds to death via Ventilation Shutdown. 7. Keep the animal welfare rules for organics that her USDA has suggested gutting.
Animal welfare is the law, and we are enforcing it. 🐾🇺🇸 @SecKennedy and I brought together partners from @USDA, @HHSGov, the @TheJusticeDept, @EPA, and @LaraLeaTrump to strengthen enforcement and protect dogs. This year, USDA has inspected more than 2,000 dog breeder and broker facilities, trained 98 inspectors, and created a new Animal Protection Bureau to improve compliance and address violations. HHS has launched more than 20 initiatives to reduce unnecessary animal testing and advance human-based research methods. I want to give a special thank you to Lauree Simmons, @BDRRescue, and other organizations who champion this important effort. @POTUS’s administration will continue to fight for animal welfare, or as Bobby said: we’re going to Make America Humane Again.
