NYPD Sergeant Ruben Cespedes has spent his adult life putting himself in harm’s way to protect others.
Nearly 17 years ago, while serving in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army, he was seriously wounded by an IED, but continued fighting to protect the soldiers beside him.
Last week, he was finally presented with the Purple Heart he earned that night.
He later brought that same courage and commitment to the NYPD, where he has also earned the Medal for Valor.
This is the nobility of policing. Congratulations, Sergeant Cespedes.

This morning, our nation pauses to remember the nearly 3,000 people killed on September 11, 2001.
The NYPD holds especially close the memory of the 23 members of the department who were killed at the World Trade Center that morning, and the more than 500 members who later died from illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.
May the memories of all those we have lost be an eternal blessing. And may we always be worthy of the legacy they left in our hands.

Over the past week, I’ve had the privilege of spending time with the cops, families, union leaders, and law enforcement partners who keep the legacy of September 11th alive.
At memorials across this city, at Ground Zero, inside our precincts, and at 1 Police Plaza, we remembered the members we lost and the extraordinary service that followed in the days, weeks, and years after the attacks.
But this week was also a reminder that their legacy endures in the men and women who continue to serve New York City today.
Twenty-five years later, it remains deeply meaningful to stand alongside those who remember, the families who still live with that loss, and the cops who have chosen to continue the noble work of the NYPD.
We will never forget those we lost, and we will never stop honoring them through our service to this city.

Twenty-five years ago, New York City was attacked by terrorists who sought to inflict unimaginable death and destruction.
Today, as we approach that anniversary, we unveiled a new memorial wall at 1 Police Plaza honoring the NYPD members who took heroic actions that day and in the months that followed. There were 23 members of the NYPD who were killed on 9/11, and we have since lost more than 469 members to illnesses connected to the rescue and recovery effort.
This wall preserves who they were and the extraordinary standard of service they left behind.
May their memories be an eternal blessing.

Today, we unveiled the new Emergency Service Unit Memorial Wall at Floyd Bennett Field. Each of the 45 names on this wall represents a person who dedicated their own life to the protection of others, and whose courage came with no conditions.
At this space, their names will be among the courageous officers who carry on their legacies. This memorial is an enduring testament to what we have lost and a powerful symbol of the promise we keep to the families of our fallen heroes.

Yesterday, we promoted members of the department who have earned this greater trust. These are men and women who put themselves in harm’s way, tirelessly pursue justice for victims, and show up for this city tour after tour.
As we mark 25 years since September 11th, we remember the NYPD heroes we lost that day, and their families who still chose service after unthinkable tragedy. That includes newly promoted Sergeant Joseph Vigiano, who carries on the legacy of his father, Detective Joseph Vigiano Sr., who was killed on that horrific day.

The NYPD has arrested Larry Montes, a 46-year-old man from the Bronx, in connection with this incident.
Montes has now been charged with two counts of assault as a hate crime and one count of criminal mischief as a hate crime, among other charges.
Earlier this evening, an individual disrupted Shabbat services at Central Synagogue in Manhattan. As synagogue security was escorting him out, he struck a member of the congregation, damaged synagogue property, and then spit at and headbutted a member of the security team. An NYPD sergeant working a paid detail at the synagogue immediately stepped in and took the individual into custody.
I have spoken with the rabbi of the synagogue, and I’m relieved that no one was seriously injured. Those who were hurt were evaluated at the scene and are doing well. There are no known additional threats at this time, and additional NYPD resources have been deployed to the synagogue. The investigation is ongoing.
I understand the sanctity of this space and its meaning for congregants. Central Synagogue is where I grew up. In joy and in sorrow, it has always been a place of comfort and peace. What happened there tonight is deeply painful. A place of worship should never be a crime scene.

In the wake of the loss of Detectives Jason Rivera and Wilbert Mora, the @NYDO_1993 started an annual basketball tournament to honor the lives and sacrifice of these two heroes who gave everything to protect New York City.
