Bravo Squadron of the RN Diving and Threat Exploitation Group have been awarded the Firmin Sword of Peace in recognition of safely disposing of more than 250 bombs, shells and explosive devices in 2024. Highlights included disposal of 500kg WWII bomb in Keyham, Plymouth; the disposal of decaying demolition charges on Pitcairn Island and neutralising a 1,000kg wartime bomb discovered on Southsea Common.

Naming ceremony held at Balaena Birkenhead for 2 new ferries built at the yard - MV Sound of Scalpay and MV Sound of Sleat. Each new vessel will carry up to 40 cars and 220 passengers on the service between Dunoon and Gourock on the Clyde.

Commodore-in-Chief, RFA, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, has visited RFA Tidesurge in Birkenhead to see progress on the tanker’s major refit and thank personnel carrying out the work. Tidesurge is undergoing a substantial 5-yr overhaul following extensive operations around the UK and North Atlantic. Around 1,200 individual maintenance tasks and 38 capability enhancements are being completed, including 42 days in dry dock for hull cleaning and repainting, propulsion work and maintenance of the bow thruster. Around 40 RFA personnel remain assigned to the ship during the refit, roughly half her normal complement, working alongside Balaena staff and contractors. Work is due to finish before Christmas, followed by trials and training ahead of RFA Tidesurge returning to operational service.
