It was a pleasure to speak at ABmunis today and connect with municipal leaders from across Alberta. Over the last seven years, the UCP government has placed an unsustainable burden on our local governments. There is only one way to end this chaos, and that is to vote for a better government. Albertans deserve a better government. We are ready to be that government. We will repeal the UCP’s unnecessary and disastrous policies and work with municipalities, not against them.

Today, I recognize two members of our NDP caucus who will not be seeking re-election after their current terms: Heather Sweet and Nagwan Al-Guneid. Both have made lasting contributions not only to their constituents, but to Albertans across our province. Heather has served her community for three consecutive terms. As our Shadow Minister for Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development, she has been a strong and tireless advocate for rural Albertans. She has brought their voices and priorities to the Legislature and has always fought to make sure rural communities have a strong voice at the table. As our Shadow Minister for Energy and Minerals, Nagwan brought a wealth of knowledge and experience in the energy sector to our team. Her expertise has helped us develop a comprehensive plan to grow Alberta’s energy industry, create good jobs, and build a strong economic future for our province. Their contributions are deeply appreciated by our entire caucus and by the communities they serve. On behalf of Alberta’s NDP caucus, I want to thank Heather and Nagwan for their public service and their dedication to Albertans. I wish them both every success in their future endeavours, but until the next election they remain integral members of our team, as we fight for the real priorities of Albertans.

The latest numbers are no surprise to Albertans. After knocking on hundreds of thousands of doors, we’ve heard many concerns about the cost of living. Utility bills and car insurance are through the roof. Albertans are concerned about the state of our education system and our public health care system. And one thing is clear: Albertans are proud Canadians. Meanwhile, Danielle Smith is focused on keeping her separatist party together, all while she and the UCP push forward with a costly, divisive referendum and two-tiered health care, while neglecting to address the real issues in education and bringing down the cost of living. Danielle Smith and the UCP are focused on the wrong priorities.

Restrictive covenants are bad for all of us. They prevent competition, stifle business growth and keep grocery prices high. We had a productive meeting this week with the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce, along with MLA’s Rakhi Pancholi and Rhiannon Hoyle. We listened to concerns of small businesses, worries about investment due to separatism, and how we can better help entrepreneurs going forward. Small businesses are at the heart of our communities and a backbone of our economy. We will make sure we’re supporting them in the best ways possible.

Danielle Smith wants to impose a $1,900 health care tax on small businesses for every temporary worker. It's an out of touch policy amid an affordability crisis and a trade war, plus employees and businesses already pay taxes. Albertans can’t afford Danielle Smith and the UCP. Today is the Citywide Food Drive in many communities around Alberta. It’s one of my favourite days, with so many families volunteering to help @FoodBanksAB. Thanks especially to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for this amazing community service. Once again, the UCP is changing the rules at the last minute for their separatist friends. We’re worried these changes could open the door to voter fraud by limiting the information available to those scrutinizing the vote. Danielle Smith won’t lift a finger to fight for Canada. We will. We won’t stop rallying proud Canadians to save Canada, no matter what barriers the UCP throws in our way.
