Also, calling the current state of US-China relations as 'managed strategic stability' is misleading and deceptive conduct. Nothing managed about it. And if you care to look into the literature on strategic stability...
Reading Eurasia Groups summary of Xi's state visit. Imagine telling someone in 2017 or 2018 that Trump would be the most China-dovish President we'd see for the rest of our lives.

I'm pretty sure I'm on the record saying that after Obama it was hawks all the way down...Real question is how far dovishness goes beyond Trumpy.

Good piece and you know Trump's administration will do precisely none of Czin's advice.
“Although the Trump administration has not formally changed its policy toward Taiwan, Trump’s statements after his prior meeting with Xi in May undermined Taipei’s confidence in the United States’ commitment to the island,” writes @jonczin. foreignaffairs.com/taiwan/co…

In 2020, stuck at home and bored stiff in the worst of the pandemic, I called up several former senior U.S. officials on Zoom and recorded “Six Crises,” a multi-chapter “video book” exploring how the United States and China—in six instances over nearly twenty years—managed to coordinate despite their deep-seated and intensifying strategic rivalry.. The camera angles are horrible, especially mine. And none of us except Mike Leavitt had quite figured out Zoom. But I called the project "Six Crises" to deliberately evoke Richard Nixon’s 1962 memoir of the same name. One premise was that countries don’t need to be “friends” to get meaningful things done. But my goal was also to explain how and why U.S.-China strategic competition was giving way to a kind of “managed enmity.” The six video chapters explored lessons learned for today’s crises, which in 2020 meant the growing COVID outbreak. The videos are with: - Hank Paulson, former Treasury Secretary (financial crisis). - Mike Leavitt, former HHS secretary and Utah governor (food safety crisis). - Tommy Thompson, former HHS secretary and Wisconsin governor (SARS crisis). - Susan Rice, former national security advisor (ebola crisis). - Jack Chao, former special envoy (malaria/TB crisis). - John Podesta, former White House chief of staff (environmental crisis). carnegieendowment.org/progra…

Confirmation if it were needed that markets have lost patience with the fiscal lassitude...
Global bond markets are blowing up. It feels to me like the crowd that tells us this isn't about fiscal stress is the same crowd that was rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. You think it's AI investment driving yields in France and Italy vertical? robinjbrooks.substack.com/p/…

Trumpian threats have become Trumpian cliches. They are eye-rolling more than jaw-dropping. Any mention of Iran speaks of how the Trump presidency has stalled. The conflict drags interminably on, with supposed exit ramps looking more like one of M.C. Escher’s endless staircases.
Trump’s stalled presidency - more proof of which came from his tired speech to the United Nations general assembly. My latest: historyneverended.substack.c…

1/ I've received a wave of media inquiries about how Taiwan will fit into the Trump-Xi meeting and whether there will be discussion about the 3rd communique from 1982. I am confident Taiwan will be discussed and doubtful there will be any grand bargains. Here's why (🧵).

Probably the abiding lesson of Trump 2 is not to take anyone in the administration at their word. Partly, Trump can turn on a dime and partly, lying and dissembling is ingrained.
Bridge Colby today on AUKUS: “We’re full speed ahead on AUKUS. We all have our marching orders. It’s ambitious and demanding. We’re all going to have to spend enough. We’re having conversations about roles and missions. But everyone’s got a plan, and now it’s down to business.”

The near daily reminder that the US has lost its capacity to do grand strategy under this administration. Beyond hopeless.
Breaking: “To China and India: You better clean up your act. Buy your oil and gas somewhere else. Appeasement is not a strategy,” says US Senator Blumenthal after Trump gains authority to place up to 100% tariff on India and others for buying Russian oil
