In 1967 Britain had more electric vehicles on its roads than every other country on earth put together, and they were all delivering milk. There were tens of thousands of them. The milk float: open sided, battery under the floor, top speed of about 15 miles an hour, and a whine you could pick out in your sleep. It was charged overnight at the depot and was back there by lunchtime. It carried glass bottles. Each one was collected from your step the next morning, washed and refilled. A bottle went round like that 20 or 30 times before it broke. The foil cap went for scrap. There was no other packaging. The milk had come from farms within a few miles, through a local dairy, and was on the step before 7. So here is what the country had. A zero-emission delivery fleet. Reusable containers with a return rate any modern scheme would kill for. No plastic. A supply chain you could cycle the length of. A man who noticed if an old lady's bottles were piling up, and knocked. It was dismantled in about 15 years, because a supermarket could sell milk a few pence cheaper in a plastic jug as a way of getting you through the door. Every piece of that system is now the subject of a government target for 2040. It was running in 1967, silently, in the dark, and nobody thought it was worth a mention.

Back in 2014, there was a man who was already aware of the irregularities involving Manchester City. That man now runs FIFA. The infamous Gianni Infantino, then UEFA General Secretary, abused his authority, shared confidential documents and, in short, outmanoeuvred the Investigatory Chamber, doing everything in his power to ensure that both Manchester City and PSG would merely receive a fine, avoiding a deeper investigation that could have led to a Champions League ban. All of these details were also revealed through Football Leaks. Given his actions as UEFA General Secretary and, more recently, as FIFA President, I can only say, in my humble opinion, that Gianni Infantino has become a cancer on football and should have no place in the future of the game.

During WW II, a man was arrested in London for calling Winston Churchill, the then PM of UK, a fool. The next day in the House of Commons, the opposition members were ready to roast the government for this. "Are we living in a police state", they shouted, "Where we cannot call the PM a fool"? Churchill's reply was disarming, “The man was not arrested for calling the Prime Minister a fool", he said, "but for letting out a State Secret at a time of war".

#Singapore would be a sexier place if they loosened the public speech laws, let people create what they wanted and allowed a little more black market. When there’s no wriggle room people feel constrained, less innovative and less likely to pair up. It’s so so damned unromantic.

I've been paying some bills. I am absolutely certain that with passwords, codes and approval codes included each one takes longer than it did 30 years ago.. when we just wrote some cheques.. and dropped them in the post box on the way to the shop.
