For the hard-of-fucking-braining this morning:
Sportswashing is when a state, government or political actor uses the popularity, prestige and emotional pull of sport to improve its international reputation and divert attention from things it would rather the world focused on less, particularly human-rights abuses, slavery which is still perfectly legal under Islamic laws or political repression.
That can mean buying a major football club, sponsoring one, hosting a World Cup or Olympics, or pouring enormous sums into high-profile sport.
It isn’t a synonym for “brown people investing money.” The defining feature is the alleged reputational purpose and effect: associate the state with trophies, superstar players, glamorous events and happy supporters, thereby distracting from, minimising or normalising criticism of its conduct. Academic literature describes precisely those mechanisms: distraction, minimisation and normalisation.
And no, the underlying practice isn’t ten years old just because the word is relatively modern. States have used major sport for prestige and political image- the Greeks and the Romans we’re doing it- what’s newer is the widespread use of “sportswashing” as the label for a particular form of it.
So you can argue about whether the term is fairly applied in any particular case, scholars do … but pretending nobody knows what it means isn’t an argument. It has a perfectly intelligible and extensively discussed meaning.
sport washing it's just a bogus term. what does it even mean sport washing ?
10 years ago. no one even knew what this was. it's just a made-up word. it means brown man money no good
white man money beautiful. that's all it is. anything other than that is just Not reality
