Delighted to share that my new book, Peasants: Makers of the Modern World, is out now with @BloomsburyBooks.
Seeking to restore the countryside's rightful place in history, and the political visibility it so desperately demands today.
Very happy that "A Collective Biography of Southern European Democratization: The Age of Transitions" (OUP, 2026) has been awarded the 2026 Edmund Keeley Book Prize by the Modern Greek Studies Association. Deeply grateful for the recognition!

Nice to see some Medieval Peasant Revolution material coming our way. Seems that we will be unshelving our Rodney Hilton "Bond Men Made Free" copies after quite a while...
Nolan's Odyssey is trending, so I look to the most remarkable Odyssey connected recent archaeological find: a Roman clay brick found in 2018 at the necropolis of ancient Olympia (Peloponnese) dating around 200 CE, its surface inscribed with the first 13 verses of Odyssey Book 14!
The text is remarkable as it describes the visit of Odysseus at the pigsty of the the loyal swineherd Eumaius during his return to Ithaca. Maybe it was created for a proud local landowner, appreciating the Homeric description of a rural estate and related it to their own Eumaius
The clay tablet has been published with great care and detail in: Summa, D., Hallof, K., Kolia, E.-I. and Lang, F. (2022) “Homerverse auf einem Tonziegel aus der Umgebung von Olympia”, Archäologischer Anzeiger, 2, pp. 1–43

As England and Norway play in the World Cup quarter final, it’s time to remember when Norwegian radio commentator Bjørge Lillelien delivered one of the most iconic commentaries of all time after Norway beat England 2-1 in a World Cup qualifying match in Oslo back in 1981:
"We have beaten England! Lord Nelson. Lord Beaverbrook. Sir Winston Churchill. Sir Anthony Eden. Clement Attlee. Henry Cooper. Lady Diana. We have beaten all of them!
Maggie Thatcher, can you hear me? Maggie Thatcher...Your boys took a hell of a beating! Your boys took a hell of a beating!"

For nearly 2,000 years, Herculaneum carbonized scrolls stayed sealed, too fragile to open without destroying them. Now the first complete scroll (PHerc. 1667) has been virtually unwrapped and read in full, end to end. The first complete digital unrolling.

We are pleased to invite you to the Seventh International Sevgi Gönül Byzantine Studies Symposium that will be held on 10-12 June 2026 at ANAMED, with the theme of “Negotiating Spaces: Borders, Neighbors and Exchanges in Byzantine Anatolia”.
Extremely interesting! I didn't know of it. It echoes the taste and ethos of archaeological documentaries of the 1960s and 1970s, like the similar ones shot across the Mediterranean at the same time. Where can we find the entire film?
1960 Cannes Film Festivali’nde gösterilen “Roman Mosaics in Anatolia”, 1800 yıllık mozaik mirasımızı belgeleyen eşsiz bir film. S. Eyüboğlu ve M. Şevket İpşiroğlu imzalı belgesel, mozaik ve geleneksel el sanatları arasındaki bağı da ortaya koyuyor. @birolguven@TCKulturTurizm
Join us on May 19th for the 4th #Byzantine Workshop: LIVED TERRITORIES, GOVERNED TERRITORIES! Co-organized by @EIEgr , @EFA, and @hisoma_umr . I'll be presenting on Byzantine agrarian territory, landscape archaeology and Jacques Lefort's work
While much of Europe is turning its back on Donald Trump, Greece is conspicuously doubling down on its relationship with MAGA.
