A leaked 2021 internal DND assessment scored the F-35 at 57.1 out of 60 points versus 19.8 out of 60 for the Gripen E. The largest gaps were in mission performance and long-term upgrade potential. Retired senior RCAF officers later wrote to the government urging it not to cut the F-35 order, arguing the Gripen could not match it in high-end combat. There are also practical sustainment considerations: if major repairs are needed, the Gripen’s size can create difficulties for overland transport on Canadian roads and under bridges, whereas F-35s are planned to be maintained & repaired at facilities in Canada.
