“It’s not fair to Balde.”
Look, I defended Balde so many times last season, but when we have this many defensive injuries and Flick still chooses a midfielder like Brian Fariñas at right back, with Cancelo on the left, clearly there’s something he’s not convinced by. He could’ve just played Cancelo and Balde.
Maybe he’s seeing something in training that he doesn’t like. We don’t know, but he’s already spoken about Balde needing more confidence when attacking and pressing. Personally, I wanted to see more hunger from him last season, and while I thought he played decently against Madrid, one performance doesn’t necessarily change everything.
Based on what Flick has shown us, he rewards players who show up and put in the work. So I don’t immediately look at this and think it’s unfair. To me, it suggests Balde hasn’t fully earned his trust, and we know how hard that can be to regain.
