Indian protestors have legit grievances and I defend their right to peaceful protest. I also think Modi and the BJP despite the many issues I have with them have generally been good for India. But Mira Nair who is @NYCMayor 's mom and @SalmanRushdie make for strange bedfellows in the western eye. But maybe that's not so strange when you consider they are both upper class anglicized Indian elite who have long regarded Modi with derision. But Rushdie is a particularly strange fit. He spent decades under an Islamist death sentence for writing a novel, and in 2022 was nearly killed by an attacker who stabbed him onstage. Yet many of the Indian protesters, woke and progressive, would never defend him against Islamism. Modi, for all his faults, has done more than any Indian politician PM to confront the Islamists which means keeping Rushdie safe.
