Sri Lankan Tamil migrant worker Sivarasa Anojan has been sentenced to death in Saudi Arabia over a Facebook comment deemed insulting to Islam and the Prophet Muhammad. The case began after a video circulated in Sri Lanka showing a Muslim man kicking a stray dog named Subramaniam that had accompanied Hindu pilgrims. Anojan posted a Facebook comment during the dispute that was subsequently reported to Saudi authorities. Anojan deleted the comment within minutes and later publicly apologized, but screenshots had already circulated. The original punishment was already extraordinary: five years in prison, a fine of 3 million Saudi Riyals, roughly $800,000, confiscation of the device used and closure of the social-media account. His family then pursued an appeal, hoping to reduce the punishment. Instead, the appellate proceedings resulted in a death sentence.
