A school trip that’s lasted 196 years 🕰️ This week, pupils from St Marylebone School paid us a visit - the very same school recorded as the first to ever visit London Zoo in 1830. Their visit marked the fifth anniversary of our Education Access Scheme - which gives local schools increased access to our Zoo and its incredible learning opportunities – and came during ZSL’s 200th anniversary year. During their visit, pupils stepped inside ZSL’s Prince Philip Library and Archive to see the original Daily Occurrences record from that year, documenting their school’s historic visit. Then it was time to bring history into the present, with learning sessions at the Zoo, getting closer to wildlife and investigating animal behaviour alongside our Conservation Education team. From a handwritten entry made almost two centuries ago to a new generation of young people discovering wildlife today, the relationship between schools, London Zoo and learning has a very long history. Congratulations to Paul Pearce-Kelly, our Senior Curator of Invertebrates, who has been nominated for the 2027 Indianapolis Prize - a hugely prestigious award for animal conservation. The Prize "recognises the world's most extraordinary scientists and researchers by rewarding individuals who work to prevent extinction and shape the future of the planet." Paul's nomination recognises his work bringing the Partula snail back from the brink of extinction - a small tropical snail, native to French Polynesia, saved through three decades of collaboration between conservation zoos and the French Polynesian government. The winner is announced at the Indianapolis Prize signature event next year. 🦪 Good news from beneath the North Sea! One year after deploying Oyster Reef Cubes off the coast of Whitburn, South Tyneside, new surveys show native oysters are surviving – and marine wildlife is making itself at home. 🌊 The one hectare restoration site was created by ZSL and Groundwork North East & Cumbria as part of the Wild Oysters Project: Tyne and Wear, using 20 Oyster Reef Cubes, 100 tonnes of scallop shell and thousands of native oysters. Recent surveys by volunteer divers from Project Baseline UK found 99% of the adult oysters still attached to the Oyster Reef Cubes were alive and healthy. Oysters that had become detached were also observed alive and within the reef site, while young oysters had successfully survived their first winter. Underwater surveys also recorded fish, sea urchins, velvet swimming crabs, shrimps and squat lobsters using the developing reef. 🐟🦀 Now, volunteers are helping us take the next step – deploying 1,000 mature native oysters, alongside 15,000 juvenile oysters growing on shell (spat-on-shell), to boost the reef and establish multiple generations at the site. With native oyster populations declining by more than 95% across the UK since the 1800s, these encouraging early results are helping us learn how we can restore this important habitat in the open North Sea. 🦪🌊 The Wild Oysters Project: Tyne and Wear is delivered by ZSL and Groundwork North East & Cumbria, with funding from Stronger Shores.
