The shortest proof that the death penalty is being taught by the Roman See today as evil, immoral, and, as Pope Francis said contrary to the Gospel, is proven by the fact that the recent revision (CCC 2267) implies that there is no crime, no matter how evil (let your imagination reign), that would incur the penalty of death.
In theory, if the very worst criminals imaginable were caught and caged in a house-pod in space for the rest of their lives, they retain, per the Catholic Catechism, the right to live until natural death and can never incur the just penalty of death in that state.
For anyone, even the State, to open that pod and administer death would be equal to abortion or murder.
If you think on that enough, you will begin to see how the whole “he never said InTrinSICalLy!!!!” is a moot point.
Two statements from Pope Francis justify this interpretation. The first is an address he gave in 2017 and the second is from Fratelli Tutti in 2020:
“The death penalty is inadmissible, no matter how serious the crime committed. It is an offense against the inviolability of life and the dignity of the human person, which contradicts God’s plan for man and society, and his merciful justice, and prevents the penalty from fulfilling any just objective. It does not render justice to the victims, but rather fosters vengeance.
… It is, in itself, contrary to the Gospel, because a decision is voluntarily made to suppress a human life, which is always sacred in the eyes of the Creator and of whom, in the last analysis, only God can be the true judge and guarantor.”
And
“The firm rejection of the death penalty shows to what extent it is possible to recognize the inalienable dignity of every human being and to accept that he or she has a place in this universe. If I do not deny that dignity to the worst of criminals, I will not deny it to anyone.”
