Visitors enjoyed a tour of Homerton’s new art exhibition on Saturday.
The tour, part of the
@OpenCambridgeUK festival, was led by our Art Curator, Eddie Ade Akin.
The exhibition includes an art collection by Coqué Martínez, a radical Basque painter who was evacuated from Bilbao to Britain (along with 4,000 other children) during the Spanish Civil War.
Visitors also saw several exhibits paying homage to Dame Leah Manning, who trained as a teacher at Homerton in the 1900s.
Her most lasting legacy is her effort to secure the evacuation of those children to safety.
Manning, a lifelong champion of causes affecting women and children, advocated for women’s rights, birth control, and equal pay, and later became the first woman Labour MP.
The 'Echoes and Arrivals' exhibition will remain at Homerton for all students, staff, Fellows, and visitors to see.
