Open Door Animal Sanctuary is the largest no-kill shelter in the St. Louis area and home to 350 rescued dogs & cats looking for their forever homes.

House Springs, MO
Well hello there! Won't you join me for lunch? On the menu, we've got kibble, tap water straight from the tap... but don't miss the real piece de resistance: the cat treats! What? Cat treats are not your thing? Well, that's okay, I suppose. They're certainly mine! My name is Beatrix and I just love hosting. I'm an excellent conversationalist! I'll talk your ear off and keep you laughing. I'm curious and interested in everything, especially when you're trying to get something done. You can usually find me on the desk or near the front of my section in the shelter, ready to greet everyone. At almost nine years old, I've got plenty of stories to tell! The one about how I ended up here is pretty straightforward: my people got divorced. It wasn't my fault. I expect that you and I could make much better stories together. I haven't met dogs before, but I've lived with kids and other cats. I do well enough with other cats that I've been given several feline roommates in the shelter, but I will set a boundary if they're being rude. That's part of being a good hostess, you know- keeping the rowdy ones in line. So what do you say? Perhaps the next shindig I host could be my housewarming party at your place.

We've got a whole litter of super cute pups waiting for homes! Journey's puppies are now 14 weeks old and hoping to find loving homes where they can grow up spoiled and cared for. Five are male, two (both black and white) are female, all are adorable, sweet, and friendly! Mom is a mixed breed, about 50 lb. Dad is a deadbeat, so we don't know what he looked like. We don't know for sure what the kids' adult size will be or what exact breed mix they are. Come on by- check them out and see if you find love! #AdoptDontShop odas.org/adopt

Hey hey hey! Can you come out and play? We can do zoomies and chase balls and eat cookies and- hey! What's your name? I'm Matchbox. And actually, I'm not a puppy. I just look like one! I'm about two years old. Do you like face kisses? I give really good face kisses. Do you like dogs? I do! I came in with another dog. Some dogs don't really like me, though, because I guess I'm sometimes too goofy and bouncy. It's okay, though! As long as YOU want to be my friend. Did you know I'm a really good boy? I'm 42 lb, so I'm not super big, but I've got a lot of energy! I would love the kind of home where I get some exercise and interactive playtime. If you've been wanting some motivation to get a little more active now that the weather is nicer, I'm your guy! Since I came in as a stray, I don't know much about my history (like if I get along with cats or kids), but I do know how to sit and lie down, so I've clearly got SOME education! So whaddaya wanna do next? Should we race? Go play in the woods? Or maybe we can go home to your house! odas.org/adopt #AdoptDontShop

My name is Soot, and I have a question for you: do you happen to enjoy fun? Are you a big fan of entertainment? Do you like being happy? Have you considered all the stupendous ways that a tiny (fully grown- a year old) black cat with gigantic eyeballs might improve your life? Because, I gotta be honest- I think about it a lot. I think about it when I'm playing with toys, when I'm exploring shelves, when I'm helping with paperwork, and when I'm climbing on your lap. I mean, I'm fantastic. I'm friendly and hilarious and adorable. And I could be fantastic and hilarious and adorable in YOUR house. It's not all altruistic, of course. I'm definitely a "do what I want" kind of girl, not an obsequious people-pleaser. It's just that what I want is to hang out with you and see what you're doing! I'm okay with other cats, but not perfect. I live in a room with 40 other cats and I do well enough to be allowed to run around with them, but I do get into the occasional spat and have to be put in time out. I haven't met dogs or little kids, so I don't know how I would feel about them. So if you want a cat who makes you laugh every day, might I recommend... myself? My name is Soot, I'm a year old, and I'm spayed, up to date on shots, and fully vetted. odas.org/adopt #adoptdontshop

You can keep your frat parties and street festivals. Does it involve bad music played loudly and people screaming "Woo!" for no reason at all in a public setting? Yeah... maybe don't invite me. Go ahead and cross "Key Lime" off your guest list for that one. Now, it's not that I don't know how to be social. If you want to spend the evening working on a crochet project in front of the latest episode of Widow's Bay? Honey, I'm in. If you just want some company while you write your novel or prepare your taxes or whatever it is that humans do with their free time? Count me in! I love a bit of quiet companionship. I'm actually a total sweetheart and very affectionate. I'm just not a party girl. At two and a half years old, I would say I've outgrown that lifestyle, but actually... I think I probably came out of the womb an introvert. When I came to the shelter, I had six children. And you know what? I think that's enough. Between that and living (as I do currently) in a room with 40 other cats, I've hit my lifetime quota for feline companionship. I would love to get out of here and live a peaceful solo-cat life. So if your idea of the perfect day is one where you don't have to talk to anyone, you and I might be kindred spirits. Come and meet me!

Do you want a life filled with friendship and whimsy? Do you secretly wish you could speak to woodland creatures? Are you pretty sure that, given the chance, you could save the kingdom through the power of love and song? Well, I don't know if I can help you with the "talking to chipmunks" thing, but I do know one thing that would help you get one step closer to your dreams: a Disney Dog. My name is Bingo and I'm the total package: a scrappy orphan with a heart of gold and a nose for adventure. I'd be the PERFECT sidekick. For one thing, I would do anything for my friends, especially if they happen to have treats in their pockets. I'm happy, confident, and very outgoing. I'm two years old- young, but not a growing baby anymore! I've topped out at just 36 lb- the perfect size to ride with you on an outrigger canoe, enchanted pumpkin, magical rug, or whatever your preferred form of transport might be. I've got a great resume, too- I've lived with cats, babies, other dogs, and even mini pigs! While I can't make any guarantees about what I'll think of YOUR kids, cats, or mini pigs, I would still like to meet them. So let's make it happen! We'll create our own wonderful story, you and I. #AdoptDontShop odas.org/adopt

Know someone who recently lost a pet? Sometimes the simplest words mean the most: “I know how much they meant to you. I’m thinking of you and remembering them with you.” Pet loss is real loss. Your kindness can help someone feel support. ❤️ #PetMemorialMonth #PetLossSupport

It's a scientifically proven fact that, as you get closer to a super-cute cat, you begin to lose the power of intelligible speech. For example, my name is Stratton, but even fully grown adults who would never dream of baby-talking to an intelligent animal often call me "Stwatton!" That's nothing, though. That's what happens when I'm, like, across the room. The closer and/or cuter I get, the less coherent the humans get. When I give them my sweet little tiny baby meow (yes, at a year old, I am a grown man- some of us just have angelic voices, okay?), even the greatest of orators starts going "Wittle kitty! Does you wanna be my bestest fwiend?" And yes. Yes, I do want to be your friend. I want to be EVERYONE'S friend. Humans and cats, anyway. I'm still trying to work out exactly how I feel about dogs. With cats? I don't even ask first. I've been known to curl up with (rather surprised) total strangers and just... see how it plays out. I'm a little more respectful of boundaries when it comes to playing with other cats- I do love to throw down with some WWE moves when I find a cat friend who wants to play with me, but I don't insist on wrestling with cats who aren't interested. With humans? I don't think I've ever met anyone who is immune to my charms. Shakespeare himself would be reduced to incoherent gibbering by my adorability. If you pet me, I'll melt into your arms. I love to be held and will wrap my paws around you and hang on. I may be guilty of a love nip here and there (I'll sometimes grab your hand in my teeth and try to pull it closer to me if you're too far away), but I'm a gentle boy. Listen- you won't believe me until you see it for yourself. So the only solution is to come out and meet me! odas.org/adopt #Adoptdontshop

My name is Merida and, unlike my namesake, I don't know much about archery or Scotland. I'm a Jefferson County dog with very little combat education. But one thing I can say is that I'm Brave, through and through. Brave doesn't mean not being scared, of course. Quite the opposite! How are you supposed to face your fears if you haven't got any? And I do have my fair share of experience being scared. My friend and I came to the shelter after being found roaming together in a subdivision. She was emaciated- nothing but skin and bone. I was a normal weight (43 lb), but terrified of the people trying to wrangle us so that we could get the care we needed. How did we get into that situation? Why was she so underweight (despite being otherwise healthy) and I wasn't? I don't think we'll ever know. I'm not terrified anymore. It takes me a little time to want to approach new people, but once I trust you, I'm an aspiring lap dog and I love to snuggle. I'm gentle, even when I'm scared. I love cookies and, once I start to feel comfortable in a new place, I love to play! I've had dog friends before, so if you have another dog, I'd love to meet them and see if we're a good match. I haven't met cats and don't know what I would think of them. I expect that, in my new home, I might need some time to adjust to being part of a family and being loved, but I know I have it in me. I just need a chance! #AdoptDontShop odas.org/adopt

What's new, honeydew? What's shakin', maple bacon? How's it goin', protozoan? What's up? I'm Buttercup! I'm eight months old, I've spent almost my entire life in this here shelter, and it's time for me to make a change. Am I ready and raring to go? Am I going to confidently bounce up to every visitor with jazz hands and backup dancers? Not exactly. That's not really my style. I'm more of a quiet, cautious soul. I like to take my time making big decisions, you know? And there's no decision bigger than, "Do I want to spend the rest of my life with this person? Do I trust them to love me forever and have patience with me when I need it? Are we a good match?" I know that my cautious nature is the reason I haven't been adopted, but what can I say? It's who I am. I love other cats, I've spent time in a foster home with dogs and done well with them, and I love to play. I'm interested in anything and everything going on around me, but I prefer to observe from a safe distance. Once I know it's safe to love you, though, I'm a very sweet and affectionate (not to mention pretty!) girl. I'm the kind of cat who's no trouble at all- I love some attention and playtime here and there, but I'm fully capable of just doing my own thing. So come and see me, Lamborghini. Let's be friends, contact lens. odas.org/adopt #AdoptDontShop
