Most agents run every step on one model, and it's usually the one the hardest step needs. The easy steps pay for that. Put a classification step on DeepSeek R1 and you pay 25x the input price of Llama 3.2 1B. And input isn't the whole bill. Reasoning models write long answers, and R1 charges more than 4x its input rate for output. So before you give a step its model, check two things on the model page: whether it supports tool calling, if the step needs it, and what it charges for output.

Every developer has seen a 404. Almost nobody has seen a 402. HTTP reserved it for "Payment Required" in 1997 and then never defined what it should do. Thirty years later the spec still says reserved for future use. x402 defined it instead.

Pay-per-call changes the operational model for agents. Give each agent its own wallet and three things become straightforward: Cost attribution becomes a balance delta. No request tagging or invoice reconciliation across workloads. Budget enforcement happens at settlement. When the wallet runs out of funds, the transaction fails. The spending limit is economic, not dependent on application logic. Credential exposure also gets a defined blast radius. A wallet key is still a secret, but compromising one agent's wallet exposes only the funds allocated to it, rather than an entire API account. There is a tradeoff: payment adds another round trip. A priced endpoint returns 402, the agent pays, then retries the request. For individual inference calls this may be negligible. For high-frequency agent loops, benchmark it. No account is required. But once you're running multiple agents, wallet topology becomes infrastructure.

If your code already calls an OpenAI-compatible endpoint, you can point it at Cluster without rewriting any of it. pip install cluster-sdk, change base_url, keep every call you already wrote. Behind that one URL: 500+ models across chat, embeddings, image, TTS, STT and reranking. Multi-provider, so a deprecated model is a routing change instead of a rewrite. The part that matters if you are building agents is x402. Client sends a request with no payment attached. Server returns 402 Payment Required with the amount, the recipient wallet and the network. Client pays, retries, gets the response. No account, no API key, no prepaid balance sitting somewhere. Which means an agent that spins up for forty seconds can call a model and pay for that one call. Nothing provisioned in advance, nothing reserved, no human approving anything mid-run. Swap the base URL and see what breaks.
