A global tech- and research-driven trading firm where ideas become breakthroughs in global markets.

We’re sponsoring the @FTAlphaville Art of the Chart in London on 15 October. In the run-up, we’re putting together a series of charts for the Alphaville substack on some of the market themes we spend a lot of time thinking about. This week: Europe’s tech sector. $ASML’s market cap is now larger than the next 10 biggest EEA-domiciled tech companies combined. That says a lot about ASML’s extraordinary rise. It also says something about the shape of Europe’s listed tech sector, where a huge amount of value is concentrated in one company.

We’ve been marking Optiver’s 40th at exchanges around the world. This week, the celebrations reached New York, with our team joining Nasdaq for an opening bell viewing in Times Square. New York is home to a growing part of our business, including our #ETF and #credit trading teams and our #AI Lab. It was a fitting place to celebrate four decades in markets, and the growth of Optiver along the way. Thanks to @Nasdaq for having us.

We’re sponsoring the @FTAlphaville Art of the Chart in London on 15 October. In the run-up, we’re putting together a series of #charts for Alphaville's substack on some of the market themes we spend a lot of time thinking about. First up: #0DTE. In the US, zero-day-to-expiry #options have gone from niche to more than 60% of S&P 500 index options volume in roughly a decade. Europe looks tiny by comparison. But there’s an important caveat: it only got started in 2023. So the question may be less “why is Europe so far behind?” and more "how quickly does it grow from here?’”

There’s a lot of engineering between writing C++ and running it in production. Optiver is sponsoring the #CppCon Tooling & Ecosystem Track, covering build graph bottlenecks, compiler parallelization, CUDA profiling, CI performance regression and more. C++ is a core part of the Optiver production stack. Our engineers work to build systems for live markets, large-scale data platforms, quantitative research and ML. With around 28,000 application instances and 800+ production changes every day, our C++ tooling needs to move fast too. Find us at Booth 10 to meet the team and learn more about engineering at Optiver. #Cpp #CPlusPlus #SoftwareEngineering #PerformanceEngineering

Today we announced an agreement to acquire a majority stake in Northpool, a European energy trading firm specialising in short-term power and gas markets. As energy markets become more complex, the combination of Northpool’s deep market expertise with Optiver’s technology, quantitative capabilities and risk management experience creates a strong platform for growth. Our ambition is clear: to build a major global energy trading business and help make energy markets more liquid, efficient and resilient. Read more here: optiver.com/insights/news/ma…

What does engineering look like at Optiver? @GergelyOrosz and his team at @Pragmatic_Eng went deep with our engineers and technology leaders to find out. The piece explores how we build and run our trading systems, the growing role of AI and the close collaboration between our engineers, traders and researchers. The result is the most in-depth look yet at our engineering culture and the tech behind our trading. Thanks to Alex Itkin, Pat Cooney and David Gross for sharing their insights. We're partnering with @explainingmrkts on an AI competition where participants build systems that respond to live earnings announcements and are evaluated against subsequent market outcomes. As John Zhu, Head of AI Lab, puts it: "Earnings announcements are a genuinely hard prediction problem, with real uncertainty, rich data and a clear outcome that shows whether you were right." A microsecond of latency could determine a trading outcome. This kind of precision takes more than fast code, it requires infrastructure engineered for reliability at scale. Engineering team leads, Tom and Waleed, explores the engineering behind Optiver's trading platforms at @dataengbytes Sydney, 28–29 July. Rebuilding a trading system from scratch sounds like a last resort until the thing that gave you flexibility a few years ago is the thing slowing you down today. Latency and fast iteration of trading ideas pull on each other. A stack that's easy to experiment in tends to grow layers, while a stack that's ruthlessly minimal can slow down research. We've rebuilt the stack three times. Each generation fixed the biggest bottleneck until the next one showed up. Read more: bit.ly/4fkPcYV

It is day two at @europython, and one of the questions we get most at the booth is whether we use AI. We do. AI has made writing code much faster, but as code becomes cheaper to produce, building codebases that are easy to review, maintain and evolve becomes even more important. Later today at 16:00, Software Engineer Dan Jones explores that in his talk, AI Slop to AI Gold: Building Codebases That Last. Until then, find us on the floor or learn more about tech at Optiver: optiver.com/what-we-do/techn…
