Absolute kudos to everyone who has had a hand in putting the “Bedlam on Ice” event together.
First, and rightfully so, everyone wants to jump straight into the fact that most of the proceeds are going to football. Awesome deal... 1000% awesome!
But that's just the short-term effect!
There is no such thing as “just” going to football. Every dollar that OSU football makes is a dollar they didn't have to allocate to all of the other sports. It's not a secret that, for OSU to keep up in today's world, football has to be the “cash cow.”
Football can make more money in one deal than other sports could make in all of theirs combined. So, that streamlined approach shows that the leadership at OSU understands the hierarchy of how this has to work moving forward.
Also, this event goes to show that the University understands the need to be innovative. It's one thing to have concerts, but those events aren't donated, so while you make money, you have a lot of costs that go into it too. But this event is seemingly bypassing that process altogether, which should make it one of the most profitable events, honestly, ever in OSU history.
As to the point of innovation...
When you have two teams, and one has more resources than the other, that doesn't mean the team with less resources can't win. But it does mean they likely can't stand toe-to-toe and get by with the status quo. They have to become a little more creative, tighter in their execution, and they have to do or be something the other team isn't.
And this event, IMO, shows this process in action in terms of the mentality of the leadership at OSU. Hopefully, this is just the beginning of thinking outside the box to solve the problem of what OSU, and other schools in the same boat, can do to compete with the SEC and B1G, which have separated themselves in the resource department.
