Picking porcini mushrooms from these mossy areas always feels like I'm performing a magic trick. Not sure where the background sounds are coming from (sorry about that) but it could be the machine elves up to no good again.

Some of my newest foraging students went out on their own and scored a pile of reishi and chicken of the woods 👀

Amanita chrysoblema var. yellow-orange variant growing off cottonwood in the Willamette Valley. They contain muscimol and ibotenic acid. Tiny amounts of dried fruits have been used for sleep and pain for thousands of years. Some see their use as better than benzos and opiates.

Hey followers. Please consider following my Instagram as well. I've been stuck in a doom loop where it thinks I'm a bot and my followers have hovered at 1370 for the last two years. I get no visibility and I can't fix it. instagram.com/oregongourmetm…

Worth every moment of frustration and anxiety. Best part is this is them at their worst (upper end of their temperature range). It only gets better for the next six months.

Boletus edulis var. grandedulis, the King Bolete mushroom growing off pine on the Oregon coast. Also known as cep or penny bun, it is our most impressive and best-tasting (imo) mushroom in the state. These beefcakes can grow to the size of 5 gallon buckets - these are babies.

Gonna harvest these cottonwood oysters soon. They are dangerously close to the new cluster. Identical genetics will fuse when they come into contact and I want the new pins to mature as beautifully as possible. (Main specimen distorted due to environmental conditions).

I cloned some native cottonwood oysters I found growing in Gervais in February. I've been slaving away at them all summer with no results. The working theory was that they have a required temp range. Well, it got cold, and triggered fruiting.

I began to grow concerned that there was some cross-spore contamination with something like turkey tail and my mycelium was engaged in a battle royale instead of fruiting. Or, they mutated into non-fruiting genetics on agar, or, errant spores germed non-fruiting genetics. Phew.

There's an interesting theory that ADHD developed as an evolutionary advantage. In a foraging experiment, people who screened positive for ADHD collected ~16% more resources and were quicker to abandon depleting areas.

My foraging student found her first lobsters today. Very proud of her. It wasn't very long until she was filling her basket. We also found some scattered chanterelles and hedgehogs. Most of the day's bounty was firm partially-parasitized white lobsters (my favorite).
