Last week, I received an email that made my heart drop. One of my first horses, Dark Energy, had been rescued from a kill pen. After an injury that we rehabbed, we rehomed him with a family who agreed to contact us if they could no longer care for him. That never happened. There is no softening what happened to him. Dark Energy was once a gorgeous, healthy black butterball. Today, he is severely emaciated. Seeing him in this condition is heartbreaking and infuriating.
We immediately made a substantial donation toward his recovery and sent a care package of stomach medications to help get him comfortable and feeling better.
I am incredibly grateful to Kirby at Rios Refuge for finding him, pulling him from the kill pen and giving him another chance. Rios Refuge is a new rescue, and they need support. If you feel it in your heart to help, please visit
riosrefuge.org. Dark Energy deserved better, and now he has people fighting for him.
