Few weeks back, I saw a post from @OluwatobiAjayiJ on industrialization policy. It made me do a wider research into Nigeria industrialisation policy outside my own sector. Anyway, the short story is that with our current industrialisation policy, as a Nigerian businessperson or manufacturer, you are not competing against a Chinese factory in isolation but against the entire Chinese production ecosystem and there’s no way you can beat them at pricing for now. You are competing against Chinese industrial infrastructure, Chinese suppliers, Chinese logistics networks, Chinese financing, Chinese manufacturing scale, Chinese engineering talent and decades of accumulated production knowledge. It is too intertwined. That is why things will always be cheaper coming from China.
Your fellow Nigerians did not reap you. The Chinese are bulk shipping straight from factory and selling you at close to production cost without retail markup in order to capture your market. It’s a solid strategy because their factories are on pressure to drive exports and their govt are subsidizing it and we are price sensitive. But please let our vendors catch a break.

I pointed this out when I was in Hong Kong. They plastered their top students/projects/good deeds at HKUST. I just told myself that they are reinforcing culture
China is putting scientists on public screens and treating them like national celebrities, we are so fucked

We have identified three Nigerian universities for our first research project. These universities are: 1. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) 2. University of Ibadan (UI) 3. Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) These universities were carefully selected based on their antecedents, geographical locations, and the quality of research work in our area of interest. The project is designed to recruit and fund at least three Ph.D. positions from each university. We will make this one of the most impactful education research projects in Nigeria. We find this project critical to the future of education in Nigeria, and I will try to carry everyone along on the journey.
My organization, Educare, will be committing $100,000 within the next 18 months toward academic research exclusively in Nigeria. We will identify and partner with some universities to deliver the outcomes. We have identified numerous challenges in the Nigerian education sector. However, our first investment will focus on the development and psychometric standardization of school exams, with critical thinking as a core component. This initiative will span primary, secondary, and tertiary education, significantly improving the quality of learning outcomes in the country. It is time to start creating a true Nigerian education system that will move our society forward. A lot of people know about the problems in Nigeria; it is time we start committing to solving them with meaningful research investments.

This is funny and true. I learned a bitter lesson from this when I was younger. I discussed an idea with someone who was a governor's brother, and I even brought my SA partners to tell him more about it. He and his brother went and bought our competition in South Africa.
How rich people look at you when you are poor but full of ideas.

$1B+ in payment volume. I think about who this number actually belongs to. Every fintech that trusted us early, every teammate who shipped through the hard weeks, every customer moving real money in markets most infrastructure ignores. The first billion is the proof. The next ten are the work.

We were contacted by NITDA through the Enugu MSME & Startup Agency (Enugu SME Center) to extend our bootcamp to an additional 100 Olympiad children in Enugu. We will still handpick them from our Olympiad talent pool. The bootcamp will start on Monday August 24th, and will be holding in their facility in Enugu. The project they will work on during this 2-week bootcamp is to build smart technology to help reduce the amount of money spent on electricity in homes. It should be able to automatically turn off lights when not in use, as well as home appliances to conserve energy and save cost. This could save billions of Naira in homes. It will be a combination of hardware and software during the bootcamp. Our future is looking exciting.

Our first drone test flight worked, although it crash-landed. But tomorrow, our stars will improve it and perfect it. This is the real definition of education for me. Every child has been so engaged, deeply involved, and super excited to learn and create things. They are applying the knowledge of maths and science to create something meaningful. The future is looking exciting.

Today was an incredibly tough day so I drove straight home at 8pm and put on Something’s Gotta Give (Jack Nicholson, Diane Keaton), after this we’ll watch It’s Complicated (Alec Baldwin, Meryl Streep) on Netflix. My wife has made pounded yam and efo riro and we’ll wash it down with Escudo Rojo and Coke (Coca-Cola pls). (We bought a yam pounder and she likes to mix her red wine with Coke) After this, we’ll face whatever tomorrow brings and go again. The child of my mother, try do life with someone who has your best interests at heart o. This thing no be ordinary eye. Oluwasheun ❤️

❤️‍🩹🇦🇷 Leo Messi: “Dad, you kept asking me to play in one last World Cup… just days before it began was when your condition got worse”. “It was the first time you weren’t going to be there with me at tournament… but Mom kept telling me you were going to get better and that you’d be well enough to travel”. “I kept telling you we were going to reach the World Cup final so you could make the trip, this was my mission once again”. “After every match, I waited for and missed your message. That’s when I realized how serious the situation really was”. “I couldn’t stop thinking about going as far as possible, give you more time and the chance to watch one of the games”. “We reached the final, but you couldn’t be there. I wanted to win it so I could bring the trophy to you and show you another one. I couldn’t”. “My legs just couldn’t give me any more”. “This time I tried to push beyond what my body could handle, but I couldn’t”. “I never managed to feel physically right”. “We didn’t become champions Dad, but you have no idea how much we enjoyed every match. Once again, you were right: I had to be there and play in it… as you told me, always”.

China now owns the world's largest and most tunnel boring machines (TBMs). 70% of the world's total are made in China. But this dominance is hard-earned. In 1997, to build the Qinling Tunnel, China paid Germany RMB 700 million for just 2 SECONDHAND TBMs. 700 million is an entire region’s tax revenue back then. But the 700 million didn't include support. China also had to hire German engineers for €800/day (≈RMB 6,800), while the average Chinese worker earned less than RMB 4,000 a year. Back then, the global market was locked by the US, Japan, and Germany. China was being robbed, simply because it couldn't produce its own. In 2002, China began the painful journey of self-development of TBM, which has over 30,000 precision parts. After 6 years, in 2008, China's first homegrown TBM was born. In a 2012 head-to-head test, it matched the best in the world. Today, Chinese TBMs lead the world. Dignity is earned. This is just an example in TBM. In humanoid robots, in electric cars, in solar farms, in drones...China has plenty of examples that make the country strong again.
Community note
The two TBMs purchased for the Qinling Tunnel in 1996 were newly manufactured by Germany's Wirth at a cost of $60 million USD including backup equipment and technical support, not secondhand for RMB 700 million. tunnelsandtunnelling.com/analysis/hard-…

"Literature review''

ALT Thierry Henry Smile GIF by hamlet

Every girl? Walahi, this is a lie. 😭🤚 I used to avoid convos like this because "you cannot know a woman's body more than her" But from empirical data I have gathered through literature review - this is not true. It shouldn't smell like perfume, it shouldn't smell either.

Terra Industries is partnering with @mivauniversity to build integrated robotics and drone labs across Miva learning centers, starting with a pilot in Abuja. Students will learn to design, assemble, test, and fly drones as part of their academic programs. Terra will run hands-on workshops, train faculty, and offer internships and jobs to top performers. Africa's next generation of engineers should learn by building. This is how we develop the talent that will build the continent's industrial base.
