I was going through some old article on the 1992 WC. I saw that as much as South Africa cried foul of the Rain rule (which was designed badly), they also were guilty of trying to manipulate the rules. It was widely written about back in the times, but not stressed on
There was a rule coming from the broadcast partner of the 1992 WC that if the 50 overs of the 1st innings were not bowled in 210 minutes, then whatever overs were bowled by then, the team batting second would have the same number of overs. South Africa knew England could score 280-290 with their start in the semi-final and they slowed down the game by bowling only 45 overs in the allotted time, robbing England of 5 overs of their death overs batting.
They knew rain was predicted, and still chose to chase that night in Sydney. Probably going by the trends in that WC, where they won more chasing than they did by setting a total. SA could now pace their innings knowing a target, after denying England of the momentum at the far end of the 1st innings.
Rain came, and the rain-rule bit them where it hurt the most, along with the strict broadcast rules of finishing a game on time. South Africa's "gamesmanship" set in motion a knockout curse that has been around (Most people don't remember Hansie winning in Bangladesh in 1998) for a long time now!

Outside of ICC tournaments and Test matches involving IND, AUS, ENG, NZ, and SA, there is currently no international cricket that creates a sense of expectation among fans. Hope the ascendancy of BAN and ZIM will result in a more expanded field of meritorious teams in the future.
