Climate Week NYC and Hunger Action Month come together this September, and so does an opportunity to spotlight food rescue at our airports. Surplus food from JFK, LGA, and EWR is collected by local nonprofits and distributed to those experiencing food insecurity in our region. In partnering with nonprofits such as @CityHarvest, @TableToTableOrg, and Gotham Food Pantry, our airport terminals have rescued approximately 70 tons of food since 2024. That's the equivalent of over 100,000 meals that would have otherwise gone to waste but have instead gone to those in need. Thank you to our terminal operators, concessionaires, and nonprofit partners for their collaboration on this important program!

Instead of using trucks to move construction materials and debris from the redevelopment of JFK International Airport, barges have helped us to eliminate more than 250,000 trips. In the aftermath of 9/11, Port Authority engineers raced to devise a plan to rebuild 7 World Trade Center and its electrical substation, which was needed to power lower Manhattan and its financial institutions that were critical to the nation’s economy. “There was never any doubt about what had to be done. In recognition of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the World Trade Center Memorial Fund have installed a new memorial at the World Trade Center campus. The Port Authority Employee Memorial honors the nearly 90 agency employees who died on 9/11 and the February 1993 World Trade Center bombing, as well as those who have been sickened or died from illnesses as a result of working on post-9/11 recovery efforts. Two years ago, we showed you how PATH was testing new technology designed to help identify railcar issues faster. Now, that pilot is moving to the next level. The Port Authority has awarded a $10 million contract to @WiTronixCareers to bring the technology to more than half of PATH’s 422 railcars. The system gives PATH teams real-time access to onboard data, helping them identify and address mechanical issues faster, keep more trains in service, and reduce delays for riders. “Giving our teams better information faster means they can address problems quicker and provide more reliable service for PATH riders,” said Port Authority Executive Director Kathryn Garcia. Following PATH's "Every Line, Every Day" service expansion, June ridership climbed to 5.9 million—the busiest month since March 2020. PATH also carried more than 250,000 riders on the day of the New York Knicks championship parade and recorded its busiest Fourth of July ever with more than 145,000 riders.
