Review the characters and make sure they will work well together before approving them and starting the game.

The characters in a party should be team players. They should be heroes. If they aren't willing to risk their lives for the other party members then having them in the party is going to cause problems.
If "that one guy" shows up with the broody, lonewolf, gloomstalker, ask him to articulate a reason why his character will risk his life to help the other characters. If he can't, then he needs to roll up another character.
