The US is trending toward more state control over the economy. That pivot is not being overseen by the intellectual descendants of early 20th century socialist leader Eugene V. Debs—it is coming from the Trump administration. piie.com/blogs/realtime-econ…

The Trump administration is correct in stating that it can now expand its presence in Greenland. However, this option was already available in the 1951 bilateral US-Denmark defense treaty, so this amounts to diplomatic old wine in a new bottle. piie.com/blogs/realtime-econ…

The more the US undertakes comprehensive efforts to reduce its vulnerability to Chinese economic coercion, the more important it becomes for Canada & Mexico to align their own policies. The US will need to work much harder to invite them along. foreignaffairs.com/guest-pas…

US imports from China have fallen substantially since the first Trump trade war. But how far have US supply chains actually decoupled from China, and what happened when a new round of tariffs arrived in 2025? @ChadBown (@PIIE) joins Tim Phillips this week on #VoxTalks Economics to discuss new research that examines US imports product by product, including consumer electronics, clothing and footwear, and AI-related imports. This product-level approach reveals how responses differed markedly across sectors. The discussion also delves deeper into the costs of maintaining more diversified supply chains, and why understanding the effects of the 2025 trade war requires looking beyond headline tariff rates to the details of individual products and sources. 🎧 Listen to the latest episode now: ow.ly/Usco50ZRvCI #Economics #Trade #UsTrade #China #Tariffs #TradePolicy

The best-case scenario from the Trump-Xi summit will be the countries begin to liberalize trade of some non-sensitive goods & the flow of critical minerals speeds up, all of which will show “a little bit of normalization of relations," Mary Lovely says. aljazeera.com/economy/2026/9…

US tariffs on China have changed the routes Chinese content reaches the US far more than they have reduced US dependence on China. Examining value-added trade flows through 2024 shows US reliance on Chinese producers has fallen much less than bilateral trade data suggest. Chinese goods increasingly make their way into the US embedded in US imports from third countries. #PIIECharts

Looking forward to discussing @lugaricano’s fantastic book Messy Jobs tomorrow with @AdamPosen @PIIE . I think it’s one of the best frameworks we have to think about how AI is going to affect work. (And it’s superbly written, too).
If you are in Washington, two announcements. I will be presenting "Messy Jobs" at PIIE tomorrown (Friday) afternoon with @AdamPosen I will also be presenting my new paper on AI and specialization at Brookings at 9am. Both events have webcast, so you can watch them. Links below.
