Here’s my attenpt to explain what’s going on in Germany:
- Competition from Eastern Europe severely weakened collective bargaining in the 1990s. The result was wage stagnation and higher inequality. (This gave rise to a temporary export boom, but it didn’t last).
- Gerhard Schroeder’s Hartz IV reforms undermined the German welfare state and created a new category of precarious low paying jobs.
- Angela Merkel’s debt brake led to massive austerity right after the global financial crisis. This was removed only for military spending.
- Germany’s leading industry was always cars. But the industry made a bad bet on ICE cars instead of EVs, and is now getting killed by China.
- German industry relied on cheap fossil fuel energy from Russia. We know how that worked out.
And now the AfD is riding high and the SPD (which used to be the world’s most prominent left-wing party) is dead. And Merz is weak feckless.
