Texas State won’t know what hit em ‼️ #TheWord

I’ve been trying to figure out Texas State’s football attendance problem for a long time. After the North Texas game, I finally went down the rabbit hole. And I came away with a different question. Texas State has proven over and over that it can put people in UFCU Stadium. 33,133 vs. Houston. 33,006 vs. Texas Tech. 32,007 vs. Navy. 31,333 vs. UTSA. 28,000 vs. UTSA in 2024. And then there’s the one that still makes me check the number every time I see it: 31,500 announced for Nicholls last year. Nicholls. UFCU Stadium officially seats 28,000, so I still don’t completely understand how an announced crowd of 31,500 works. But that’s the official number. So this isn’t really a question of whether Texas State can create demand. It can. The better question is why that demand disappears so quickly. Last year after Nicholls: Troy: 24,369 James Madison: 17,363 ULM: 17,078 South Alabama: 16,169 This year, UTSA drew 22,019. It was brutally hot, so I’ll give that game an asterisk. I was there. Sitting in the shade wasn’t exactly pleasant. Then North Texas came to town Saturday. A Texas school. An AAC school. An old Texas State rival we played 39 times before the series went dormant after 1994, and the same program we beat in the First Responder Bowl two seasons ago. 14,166. And watching on national TV, it looked every bit of it. That’s what finally changed the question for me. Texas State doesn’t seem to have a problem getting people to come to a football game. We have a problem getting them to become Texas State football fans who keep coming back. Winning helps. Opponents matter. Kickoff times matter. Weather matters. Promotions matter. But none of those things by themselves create a culture. Winning creates demand. Culture creates habit. And after digging through about 15+ years of Texas State attendance and student-engagement efforts, I’m starting to think our biggest problem isn’t a lack of ideas. It may be continuity. We’ve shown we can create attendance. What we haven’t figured out is how to convert it into a habit and keep that habit going from one class of Bobcats to the next.
