When did Topps flagship parallels get out of control?
For the first 40 years of Topps flagship, there were no true parallels.
And by “parallel,” I mean an alternate, short-printed version that mirrors the complete flagship base set — not an insert set, not Tiffany, not a separate product.
🟨 1992: Topps Gold arrives — the first true flagship parallel.
🟨 1993–94: Gold continues.
⏸️ 1995–2000: Gold disappears.
🟨 2001: Gold returns, now serial-numbered to the year of issue — /2001.
⬛ 2003: Black joins it, numbered to the Topps anniversary — /52.
Base. Gold. Black.
That remained the basic flagship formula until 2010/2011, when the modern explosion of junk parallels began.
