“Sumud itself didn’t protect us from the genocide.” Abdalhadi Aljila warns against the romanticization of Sumud when it places an impossible burden on the victim. Palestinians endure Zionist colonization not because they’re super human, but because they have no other way of surviving its brutal occupation and savagery. On February 25, 2026, Nadim Bawalsa, associate editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies, facilitated a conversation with the four authors: @alijla2021, Hala Alyan, Tareq Baconi, and @MaiSerhan on “The New Palestinian Memoir,” delving into the myriad themes that emerge from the books and the authors’ distinct yet overlapping experiences. Nearly 70,000 Israeli settlers entered the Al-Aqsa compound this year, marking an all-time annual high since East Jerusalem was occupied in 1967. Muslim worshippers have been barred from entering the compound as settlers tour under the protection of Israeli forces, a practice backed by Itamar Ben-Gvir who himself has repeatedly stormed the site, provoking Palestinians and Muslims around the world. This essay, written by Nazmi Jubeh and published in the Journal of Palestine Studies in Winter of 2016, argues that Israel's recent and recurrent violation of the status quo at Haram al-Sharif in Jerusalem's one critical episode in a decades-long series aimed at gaining control of the area. This paper also seeks to show that although tension in Jerusalem has reached the boiling point, the conflict is not merely a matter of who controls the contested area. Rather, it is the crucible of the much broader struggle for survival by Palestinians resisting almost fifty years of occupation. This essay was translated from Arabic by @annygaul. Hisham Awartani's shooter has been convicted. On Monday, a Vermont jury found Jason Eaton guilty on three counts of attempted second-degree murder and rejected his insanity defense. In November 2023, Eaton shot Hisham Awartani, Tahseen Aliahmad, and Kinnan Abdalhamid while they were walking in Burlington, Vermont, during a Thanksgiving visit. All three were 20 years old. Hisham was left paralyzed. In the Journal of Palestine Studies Professor of psychology Dr. Devin G. Atallah and Hisham Awartani reflect on the apparatus of loss imposed by Israel's genocidal violence, and on the necessity of grief. Across time and space, Palestinians meet the harm and loss inflicted on them by grieving in community and working toward a liberated future. In this firsthand account of the Sabra and Shatila massacre 44 years ago, Zakaria al-Shaikh offers a glimpse of what it was like to witness one of the most harrowing episodes of the Lebanese Civil War, one forever etched in the memory of Palestinians and Lebanese alike. Under the proxy of the Israelis, Phalangist militias surrounded the camp for three days and massacred around 3,500 civilians, mostly women and children. Al-Shaikh’s recounting of the events is a heavy but necessary record of unchecked vengeance unleashed on the innocent who were left to meet their death alone in the camps.
