The anticipation of the apocalypse is as old as western civilization itself, but our fears didn't take on a distinctly technological flavor until one specific event: the First World War. Read Ben's article "The Lifecycle of an Apocalypse" here: palladiummag.com/2026/04/22/…

If this law passes no confidence the state of CA survives in its historical form. All entrepreneurial ventures will leave and or form outside the state.

In-N-Out is a family business that has never taken outside capital. A wealth tax like California Proposition 40 would not only take 5% of the company; it would change the fundamental kind of business In-N-Out is allowed to be. Read the full article here: palladiummag.com/2026/09/22/…

This is a really, really, really good and thought-provoking article, and it's not paywalled.
The best parts of In-N-Outs’s corporate strategy — hiring local kids instead of migrant workers, refusing to franchise and maintaining quality, etc. — are only possible because it’s family-owned. A wealth tax would kill In-N-Out Burger.

@mcuban and @RoKhanna recently got into a fight over California’s proposed billionaire wealth tax. I think the argument missed the more existential problem at the heart of the proposal: it could make sovereign control of companies functionally illegal. The essay explores this problem using @lynsi_snyder and her control of In-N-Out as the central example. Hope you enjoy it, and thanks to @palladiummag and @SamoBurja for working with me on the piece.
