PRJ is a literacy 501(c)(3) that instructs & supports grassroots parent groups to hold the education system accountable for evidence-based literacy instruction.
🧠 What if we could identify children at risk for reading difficulties BEFORE they begin to fail?
Harvard neuroscientist Dr. Nadine Gaab has spent years studying the developing brain and early indicators of reading difficulties.
And next Wednesday, she’s joining Parents for Reading Justice LIVE!
This is your opportunity to hear the research and ask your questions directly.

If you're poor and you want your child to learn to read, move to Mississippi. 📚
Sounds crazy? Check the Nation's Report Card. Mississippi's low-income 4th graders now outread low-income 4th graders in EVERY other state. A state that ranked 49th in 2013 is now #1 in 4th-grade reading once you adjust for demographics.
How? They trained teachers in the science of reading, put coaches in classrooms, and refused to let kids slip through the cracks.
So what's our excuse, New York? Nebraska, California, Iowa?
Mississippi proved it can be done. Every child can learn to read. The question is whether the rest of us have the will. 💪

In Ohio, we're not messing around when it comes to how our kids learn to read. 📚
Districts still have plenty of autonomy in how they do it. But on the things that matter most, the expectations are clear:
✅ High-quality instructional materials
✅ Teachers trained in the science of reading
✅ Accountability for outcomes
We've given schools the resources and the training. Now we expect results for children. How you get there is up to you.
Some things you just do because they're best for kids. 💪
Thank you, @GovMikeDeWine and Director Dackin, for putting Ohio's children first.

Sold a Story Season 2 is out. features.apmreports.org/sold…
You can hear episodes 1 and 2 today.
Then it's one episode a week, on Thursdays, through Nov 19.
When a child doesn't learn as a result of instruction provided, isn't that a question we should be asking about the instruction instead of making it about that child's inability to learn?
Sold a Story Season 1 felt like a reckoning over how we teach reading. But the conversation is much bigger. It’s about how we teach, period.

Literacy isn't just a heart issue. It's a pocketbook issue.
Some people are moved by heartstrings. Everyone is moved by their pocketbook. 💵
Here's what years of literacy advocacy have taught me: reading isn't just an education issue. It's an economic issue. A workforce issue. A national competitiveness issue.
And it affects every American, every single day.
Right now, only about 1 in 3 of our students in 4th, 8th, and 12th grade read proficiently.
How do we compete with China when two-thirds of our kids can't read at grade level?
We don't.
Here's the hopeful part: as Dr. @LouisaMoats points out, research suggests about 95% of children can learn to read with evidence-based instruction.
95%.
Imagine where the United States would be today if we'd delivered on that.
Every child who learns to read becomes a stronger worker, a better-informed citizen, and a more secure family. Their success is our success.
It's in ALL of our interest that children learn to read. 📚

Sold a Story changed the conversation on reading.
Season 2 is looking at what happened to teaching itself and why an evidence-based approach (Direct Instruction) was sidelined for so long.

Episodes 1 & 2 explore what happened to evidence-based teaching.
Parents deserve transparency and instruction grounded in research—not another generation of failed practices.
That’s why Parents for Reading Justice exists.

Season 2 of Sold a Story appears to be about Direct Instruction.
Emily Hanford and her team went deep on an approach with decades of evidence behind it... one the education system has mostly rejected anyway.
Trailer’s out. Season starts Oct 15.
