Persian king Xerxes and his army in 480 BC. He captured most of Greece and navy consisting of approximately 800 galleys. He stopped a small Greek fleet of 370 triremes in the Saronic Gulf.
After this, the Greek commander Themistocles withdrew the Persian fleet to the narrow waters of the strait at Salamis, where the Persian ships had difficulty in maneuvering collectively. Greek triremes attacked heavily. He hit and sank many Persian ships. While the Greeks sank nearly 300 Persian ships, they themselves lost only about 40 ships.
