We live in an age where billions have anonymous digital access around the globe, whilst hundreds of millions cross the world and tens of millions cross the nation every single day.
The potential for criminality here is off the charts (especially for children online exposed to the whole world). It is unlike anything that we have ever experienced in human history.
If we have traffic police on our literal highways, all the more so we need police on our virtual super-highways (now there’s a term that dates me…). Also, even without criminality, societies have to be managed. There has to be some form of guaranteeing identity. It would be nice to believe that people could work with voluntary association, but that is a pipe-dream (hence the Tragedy of the Commons). Up to about 50 years ago, this need for management could be handled informally, organically, locally. People knew you because you grew up together and saw each other from one day to the next. Now though will live in a hyper-mobile world of millions upon millions of transient strangers. The old ways just cannot keep up with that.
We need Digital ID.
And that includes Facial Recognition. The police have always done this (what do you think Wanted posters are for), the only different being now that, in a society so much larger and more mobile than ever in human history, the system has to be computerised to keep up with the complexity.
The catch, of course, is that our government simply cannot be trusted not to abuse that power. You know that it would soon turn into a Panopticon dedicated to imposing unwholesome, possibly downright insane, values upon us. Dare to question its latest foreign war, or the current woke crusade of the moment, and ‘click’ you lose your ID and are frozen out of your life.
So I’m left with the uncomfortable situation of knowing that Digital ID is needed, and is certainly coming (just as surely as CCTV cameras sprouted on every corner, smartphones are carried everywhere, Chip-and-Pin replaced signatures, and now the need for ID to combat vote-fraud), whilst being fully aware that our govt categorically cannot be trusted not to abuse it. I realise that this is not a typical internet polarised answer (tough) but are we trying to have a grown-up discussion about the trade-offs or is the internet just for tabloid slagging matches?
The fact remains though, when all is said and done, that in the world that we have made we need Digital ID.
