Staying ready for the road ahead!  As more alternative fuel vehicles hit the road, our fire hazmat team is staying prepared to effectively respond to incidents involving these emerging technologies.  As part of the annual training, firefighters spent time learning about the new electric school buses being utilized by Pittsburgh Public Schools, as well as electric and fuel-powered trucks used by the Pittsburgh Department of Public Works.  They learned how to identify the different vehicle systems and the potential hazards associated with each type of power source.   The training included classroom instruction and hands-on field exercises.   This helps firefighters make informed decisions and select appropriate tactics when they arrive on scene!

A milestone for Pittsburgh’s iconic Cathedral of Learning! On August 17, 1926, our Planning Commission authorized the Superintendent of the Bureau of Building Inspection to grant @PittTweet a permit to construct the Oakland landmark. Ground was broken on September 27, 1926.

The HACP Development & Modernization Team closed out a busy week of celebrations with a ribbon cutting at The Standard on Fifth in Uptown this afternoon. The Standard on Fifth is new construction of 51 units, completed through a partnership between @BeingBeacon and @UptownPgh. The HACP invested a $1.7 million gap financing loan and 17 PBVs in the project. Congratulations to our partners at @BeingBeacon and @UptownPgh for this wonderful achievement! EMS training Tuesday! River rescue divers recently completed their annual training requirements to maintain their readiness and skills for emergencies on the water.  During this training, divers practiced locating and recovering objects intentionally placed underwater. They utilized their knowledge of underwater search techniques and established search patterns. A second diver remained on standby in the event of an entanglement. Each year, River Rescue divers must complete 8 dives to meet the unit's internal requirements including two night dives and two ice dives during the winter. They must also complete an annual swim test. Pittsburgh EMS maintains a 24/7 dive team and Swiftwater Rescue Unit staffed out of the River Rescue station in partnership with the @PghPolice. This team's station is located inside PNC Park with a boathouse on the Allegheny River.

Through an innovative partnership with the Allegheny County Health Department, Pittsburgh EMS launched a pilot program in 2024 to bring Hepatitis A vaccinations and Hepatitis C point-of-care testing directly into community settings, including shelters and other locations serving high-risk populations. The program helps connect people with essential care while strengthening Pittsburgh's ability to respond to future public health emergencies. Our work was recently highlighted by the SHIELD Initiative as a model that other EMS systems and health departments can learn from and adapt within their own communities. Pittsburgh EMS is proud to lead the way in expanding the role of EMS in community health and public health preparedness.
