It's so tedious listening to politicians. The new UK Prime Minister tells the UN he wants us to be a world-leader in AI. How? Cheaper energy? Planning reform? Tax reform? More data centers? No. A government taskforce. International regulations. Because though "change is best when it's bottom-up," it can only be handed down by government. This is necessary, he says, because in the last industrial revolution, things for workers got "far worse" before they got better — which is, put politely, debatable. (I can only assume an aide has heard of the Engels Pause but nobody bothered to look into it.) The implication being that a government made up entirely of ex charity call center workers, student union reps and failed primary school teachers could have done better with the industrial revolution than the finest businessmen of the age.

One of the most telling and depressing phenomena in social psychology was elucidated by the Asch Conformity Experiment. First conducted in the '50s, the experiment sat participants in a room with a number of (unbeknownst to the participant) actors. The participant was shown a card with a line drawn on it. They were then shown a number of lines on a screen. The lines were of different lengths: A, B, and C. They had to state aloud which of the lines on the screen matched the line on the card. During the test, the actors were told to all give the same incorrect answer. If Line B matched the length of the line on the card, all the actors said Line C was the correct answer. The test: how many people were prepared to deny reality to fit in with the consensus position. The study found that 75% of participants - all educated to at least undergraduate degree - conformed with the incorrect majority at least once during the test. Only 25% of participants refused to conform at all. More than a third of all answers prioritised conformity over reality. Reading about this formed one of the most important planks of my worldview: the more a position relies on social enforcement, the less sound it is as an argument. This exposes an underlying truth that explains repeated outbreaks of fanaticism among human populations on all manner of topics, from Israel to Mao to the Moonies. It also explains why radical movements deploy so many of the same tactics to achieve said fanaticism, and why celebrities are so strongly pressured into taking political stances. It is about moral fervour. The more people you can find to repeat a line, the more people will conform to that line, regardless of its basis in reality. And, sadly, the goodness in humans - the desire to be agreeable - makes many of us particularly susceptible to this sort of manipulation.

I dunno, man. I can't remember the last time I played a game where dodge-rolling on the wrong bit of the map reliably breaks the entire game, or climbing something *with a climbing animation* lets you mantle over the walls of the universe. I've been out of bounds without trying. Several times. I also got stuck in a barrel and had to reset the game while perfectly inbounds. I've been stuck in an in-bounds tree. I had to reset the game because Mystique refused to use a computer. Believe it or not, being able to get out of bounds so easily is a massive flaw with the game. If you can't see that then I'm not sure what's left to break.
