Anna ran for her life, but the smiling strangers were already waiting at every exit.
My girlfriend seriously asked me not to kill her if I ever stopped loving her, and I honestly didn’t know how to respond.
I’m 20, she’s 21, and until that conversation, I thought we were doing pretty well.
We weren’t one of those couples who screamed at each other every other day.
We didn’t have explosive arguments, throw things around, or threaten to leave whenever we got upset.
We’d never even raised our voices at each other during a disagreement.
The closest thing to physical aggression in our relationship was her playfully slapping my arm when I teased her.
That afternoon, I was sitting at my PC playing a game when she asked me something.
“Can I ask you a question?”
I figured she wanted to talk about something normal, so I told her to go ahead.
She paused for a moment before saying, “If there’s ever a time when you don’t love me anymore, please just let me go, okay?”
I turned my attention away from the screen.
She continued, “I know we’re forever, but if it ever comes to that, please don’t make violence an option.”
For a second, I honestly thought I’d misunderstood her.
I asked what she meant, and she clarified that she was talking about me killing her.
Not hurting her during an argument.
Not threatening her. Not getting angry and saying something stupid.
She meant actually killing her.
I remember sitting there thinking, Where the hell did that come from?
I immediately told her that I would never hurt her and that violence would never be an option for me, regardless of what happened between us.
If I ever fell out of love with her, I’d tell her. If our relationship stopped working, we’d talk about it.
If we couldn’t fix things, we’d break up and go our separate ways.
Why would murder even enter the conversation?
I wasn’t angry because she had mentioned something unpleasant.
I was disturbed because the person I loved had apparently imagined a situation where I might kill her simply because I no longer wanted to be with her.
And I couldn’t understand what had made her think of me that way.
I told her that it was upsetting to hear your own girlfriend seriously ask you not to murder her, especially when you’d never behaved violently toward her.
I expected her to understand why that would bother me.
Instead, she told me I was making the conversation about myself.
That response caught me off guard.
I asked her whether she genuinely thought I was capable of killing her.
Had I ever done anything that made her feel unsafe around me? Had I ever threatened her, intimidated her, or made her afraid of what I might do when I got angry?
