Winter storms. Urban wildfire. Extreme heat. Floods. Cyberattack. Earthquake. The City of Portland plans for a wide range of hazards, some of which are becoming more frequent or more likely because of climate change. Preparedness season is upon us. Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort to focus on preparing for emergencies, leading up to the Great ShakeOut on Oct. 16, a nationwide drill to drop, cover and hold on in the event of an actual earthquake. Disaster planning is not a theoretical exercise. Every year, the City responds to multiple disasters. For example, a massive winter storm hit Portland in February 2025. Portland's most valuable asset in withstanding disasters is our community. Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NETs) embody the spirit of community resilience. More than 1,401 active volunteers—who complete extensive training—serve as vital partners in disaster readiness, response, and recovery, helping neighbors prepare, stay informed, and stay safe. Preparedness is everyone's responsibility. One thing you can do is sign up for public alerts at PublicAlerts.org and to explore the site to learn about hazards affecting your area. Visit the City’s website to learn more about staying prepared. Portland.gov/Emergency #Portland #EmergencyPreparedness

A massive fire blazed through the Centennial Mills building on NW Naito Parkway on Aug. 2. There are no known deaths or injuries, but there is extensive structural damage and a risk of collapse. The area is closed to the public – do not go inside the safety perimeter. This is an evolving situation. Visit the City’s website for updates. Portland.gov/Centennial-Mill… #Portland #PublicSafety

😷 When is the smoke going away? Smoke will persist today, impacting air quality and visibility. Winds from the west are forecast to push smoke eastward beginning tonight into Thursday, but it won't be until Thursday night that we see the best clearing of the smoke. #ORwx #WAwx

🔥 ⚖️ Managing extreme heat and smoke can be a balancing act, but for most people at risk, extreme heat and overheating is more immediately dangerous than smoke. 🔄 If you have air conditioning, keep windows closed, set the AC to recirculate indoor air and run an air cleaner. 🏠 If you do not have AC, open windows at night to cool your home, be sure to run an air cleaner to help filter out the smoke let inside.

Protect yourself from wildfire smoke. Stay indoors and keep windows closed. Keep your pets indoors too! If you go outside, avoid exertion and consider wearing a respirator. Monitor the air quality for your zip code at airnow.gov #ORwx #WAwx

If you missed our first National Night Out event, here are some fun photos and an invitation to the next two Fridays' events on August 7th and 14th! Due to a heat advisory by the National Weather Service and unhealthy air quality from wildfire smoke, we've made the decision to cancel the National Night Out event on August 4 at Ed Benedict Park. More info on the other events: Portland.gov/NNO National Night Out is about more than meeting first responders—it's about building relationships, increasing transparency, and strengthening connections between community members and Portland's public safety systems. By consolidating City resources into these shared events, community members can engage with multiple public safety partners in a unified, accessible setting. All partnerships and participation are thoughtfully aligned to ensure the space remains welcoming, respectful, and rooted in the well-being of the community. @pdxfire @portlandpolice #Portland #CommunitySafety #NationalNightOut

A pattern shift on Monday is expected to bring easterly to northeasterly winds to NW OR and SW WA. In turn, this will send smoke and haze from wildfires burning east of the Cascade crest into areas west of the Cascade crest. Expected to linger in the area through at least Wed.
