At the SIDS Ambassadors Forum co-hosted by the Government of Ireland and OACPS , H.E. Mr Abhimanu Mahendra Kundasamy, Ambassador of the Republic of Mauritius🇲🇺, reminded the forum of the profound effects of climate change on SIDS and the importance of partnerships that bring together knowledge, expertise and practical solutions. His intervention highlighted three priorities: strengthening climate resilience, protecting and preserving our oceans, and advancing maritime security. Progress in each of these areas will require greater access to financing and a deliberate shift from commitments to practical action. A central  message was: SIDS should not be viewed only through the lens of vulnerability. They must also be recognised as contributors to global solutions. Across Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific, SIDS bring valuable knowledge and leadership in areas such as climate adaptation, ocean governance, renewable energy and community resilience. The international community must create more space for these experiences to shape global policy and investment. He called for simplified access to climate finance, stronger project-preparation support and eligibility criteria that reflect vulnerability, including through the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index.  Crucially, adaptation, ecosystem protection and loss and damage should be financed through grants, not by adding to the debt burdens of vulnerable countries. Ambassador Varo also highlighted the importance of Pacific-owned solutions, welcoming Ireland’s €3 million pledge to the Pacific Resilience Facility and encouraging wider support from Team Europe. On nature and the ocean, he emphasised that solutions must be people-centred, nationally owned, respect customary ownership and ensure fair benefit-sharing. He also called for support for BBNJ implementation, sustainable fisheries and the protection of maritime zones in the face of sea-level rise. Ambassador Mills underscored the importance of a rules-based international system that delivers mutual benefits and responds meaningfully to the circumstances of SIDS. This requires not only international commitments, but also the capacity, financing and institutional support needed to implement them. Her intervention drew attention to several important priorities: the full implementation of the BBNJ Agreement and operationalisation of its special fund; recognition of the special circumstances of SIDS at COP31 and to be mainstreamed into all international processes; increased climate finance for adaptation; continued commitment to keeping the 1.5°C goal alive; and further operationalisation of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index. She also emphasised the importance of data, stronger coherence across international implementation frameworks that govern the partnership between the OACPS and  EU and continued attention to the recent international legal developments relating to climate responsibility. The message was clear: global agreements must work in practice for the countries whose futures depend most directly upon them. This is why partnerships for SIDS must go beyond expressions of solidarity.
