in the higher arts (poetry, music, painting) it is fine, even admirable, for an artist to engage only with their own tradition. in the bastard arts (film, video games, opera) the artist must be familiar with the wider world.
all writers do is read novels. they don’t play video games or table top rpgs. that’s why novels all have great prose and terrible gameplay mechanics
