Lots of discussion around the level scaling and easy mode stuff. One final thing I’ll say, and why I chime in so much:
The question being asked is “why wouldn’t you just watch a movie?” The answer is, the gameplay. Whether someone plays on easy mode or through level scaling options to omit “in-fun” side quests… the player is still in control. That matters. It matters for brain engagement and memory retention. Watching a movie cannot do that.
Now, if the thesis here is that the added challenge is a different level of engagement with the brain, absolutely. But the reality is that even on easy mode or 0% completion of side quests, the control that a player exerts is a fundamentally different experience than merely watching a YouTube video. Flying the highwind, or driving a Segway through tables on the boardwalk, or exploring a town and choosing which npcs to talk to or not… THAT is what makes playing more satisfying than watching a YouTube video of it. And if required side quests or battle difficulty robs someone of those experiences that they want, then options to remedy that are fine by me.
Now, I say this as someone that platinumed rebirth and enjoyed all 400 of my hours in that world. I will not use these options, personally. (Also, I wish there were a hard mode, especially available at the start!) But for a story that imo is worth experiencing as a player, I think this is a great addition.
