August 26 is a day we remember. Abbey Gate is a name America must never forget. Thirteen of our fellow service members died there while serving and protecting others. In the final moments of their lives, they were still helping strangers reach safety. They were not “the 13.” Each had a name, a family waiting at home, and a life they should still be living. Chapter Three: Routes Beyond Kabul When the most visible path out began to close, the evacuation effort had to extend beyond Kabul. On two occasions, volunteers helped move people toward clandestine landing strips west of Kandahar. Others were connected with covert escape routes leading toward and across the Pakistani border. There was no single plan or guaranteed route. Each movement depended on different volunteers, local contacts, transportation options, and narrow windows of opportunity. August 20th The airport remained the clearest path out of Afghanistan, but it was rapidly becoming impossible for many people to reach. Reaching HKIA did not guarantee entry, and reaching a gate did not guarantee a place aboard an aircraft. As access routes closed and the gates became overwhelmed, volunteers confronted the limits of an evacuation system built around a single point of access. If Kabul airport could no longer provide a reliable way out, other routes would have to be found. Afghanistan fell on August 15, 2021. Project DYNAMO did not yet exist, but the mission that would create it was already taking shape. On August 24, that mission became Project DYNAMO. Over the next eight days, we will tell that story.

Following today’s earthquake in Colombia, Project DYNAMO has activated its monitoring center and is working closely with local and regional partners to assess conditions and prepare for an escalated response if needed. While no widespread travel interruptions are currently expected, U.S. citizens in Colombia may still require guidance, and we are here to help.
