my own personal note on this: for the last year or so, i haven't really had much growth on this account and that's down to my own lack of consistency with it. through multiple factor of things like work being busy, travelling more, reconfiguring my life to be less online and lack of motivation this account has stayed roughly around ~4.5/6k in audience size. and it stalled for the very reason i mention in the post below: lack of consistency. whereas, you take the first year that i ran this account: i would spend at least 2-3hrs on this account daily; replying to people, posting, drafting content and messaging people. the result of that was "up only". my account went from 0 to 4,000+ within a space of 18 months by doing the above. this is not a sympathy post, i don't really care how much growth i get on this account these days, i only post to share my knowledge these days, but to show you what it really takes to grow a social account.

being bored and having nothing to do is one of the best things you can do as a marketer. when you’ve got nothing to do and nothing to think about is when all your best ideas will come to you. i often find that when i take my dogs out and “raw dog” it (is that still a thing?) with no music, no podcast or anything but walking and looking around i get a rush of ideas. same goes for time off from work too. when i’m not thinking about work during my time off is ironically one of the best times for me to get ideas for work. so sometimes the best advice is not doing work.

people underestimate the level of consistency it takes to build a social account. they’ll have an account for a year or so and post/comment in spurts of a week or two spread over that time and complain that they’re not getting the growth they want. growing a social account is hard because it requires you to post and comment every. single. day, not just random spurts here and there. not only do you need to be active daily, you need to do it every day for 12-24 months to get any “meaningful” growth. the few who grow their accounts quicker are the exception so for 99% of people and companies, you need to put in some serious time and effort to grow.
