When a crisis hits, humanitarian organizations have seconds to act ⏳
Money has to reach people fast, and reach them safely.
For years, NGOs have explored stablecoins to deliver aid within incident response programs. This is due to their increased decentralization, speed, cost savings, cross-border capabilities and price stability, among other advantages.
Out of early experiments, a new problem arose. Payments were made on public blockchains, making every disbursement visible forever.
In fragile jurisdictions this transparency can increase the vulnerability of those most affected. Refugees may avoid registering for support altogether, fearing exposure could lead to targeting and extortion.
Private stablecoins on Aleo provide a safer way to distribute cash assistance.
With privacy introduced at the protocol level, NGOs can send funds to eligible recipients without exposing who they are.
Due to the programmatic design of Aleo, organizations can still maintain a verifiable record for donors and auditors, while keeping recipient information protected.
In April 2026, Aleo, @MCSocialVenture, Humanity Link, @DRC_ngo, and @GOAL_Global partnered to launch a first-of-its-kind cash assistance pilot supporting refugees at the Colombia–Venezuela border. Funds are disbursed in private USDCx on Aleo through WhatsApp, no crypto knowledge needed.

Rainfall shocks often become credit shocks for informal traders in Nairobi. Our pilot with @BlockBima, @Fortunecreditld & @ShambaNetwork tested if embedded insurance could change that math.

In a new pilot project, @crypto_council and @MCSocialVenture found blockchain-based insurance expanded access to credit for small businesses. How?
Flooding is one of the biggest threats to the survival of informal market merchants in Nairobi, Kenya, where the pilot took place. Climate insurance was embedded into small loan products for these merchants.
If satellite-verified rainfall crossed a threshold that could cause flooding and damage to borrowers’ market stalls, smart contracts on the XRP Ledger automatically reduced borrowers' repayment obligations.
The results:
▪️77% of borrowers without an insurance payout still repaid on time or without major issue - well above the ~40–60% default baseline.
▪️Policy settlement time dropped from a 30-day industry baseline to 1 day.
▪️On-chain settlement cost $0.0067 vs. an estimated $21.70 under a traditional parametric model - a 3,000x reduction in cost.
▪️Embedding insurance made the pilot lending partner more willing to extend credit to non-traditional borrowers – 100% of the pilot insured borrowers were first-time customers.
