Adam is a leading figure in shaping how ambitious science gets funded and built. In this conversation, he shares that a full mouse-brain connectome — once estimated at $10B — would cost roughly $100–200M today, and that a human one could follow for roughly $1–2B within several years' program: numbers that would have sounded fictional a decade ago. He pioneered the Focused Research Organization (FRO) model — time-bound teams built to produce the public goods that neither academia nor a startup will fund — which has since inspired the NSF's new $1.5B X-Labs initiative.
This conversation is about what's next and what it takes to get there: what mapping a complete mammalian brain could unlock — insights into brain disease, consciousness, how the brain actually learns, and a path to mind uploading. "We badly need a circuit-mapping frontier lab," Adam says of connectomics — a field he calls one of the most neglected, and the one most poised to scale, in neuroscience today.

Stargardt disease destroys central vision. There is no treatment that brings it back. This clinical trial patient was diagnosed with Stargardt disease and became legally blind – he could no longer read or recognize faces.
He's now part of the clinical trial testing Science's PRIMA implant (approved in Europe for geographic atrophy) in patients with Stargardt disease and retinitis pigmentosa. During his first rehabilitation session after surgery, he saw a letter again.

Launchpad wallets can now be funded by credit card.
Previously, funding a wallet meant buying elsewhere and transferring in. Card funding happens on the Launchpad itself, through @privy_io, and self-custody is unchanged: the wallet stays yours, and Bio never holds the funds.
This is the first step toward something larger. Most people who want to fund science don't hold crypto and shouldn't have to. We're building the rails that let fiat capital reach research directly, and removing each piece of friction between wanting to back a project and doing it.
