Last night I went and implemented font variation support in mplcairo, using all the builtin capabilities of Cairo and FreeType:

Also, video compression kills the fonts on thin weights and/or if you scale up the video, so don't @ me about the render quality.

Today we're releasing two variable open source fonts from @GitHub, Mona Sans and Hubot Sans. We use them in production, and now you can use them too.

While I don't love how it works, managed to get the Transparency plugin working again in @impidgin 3 against @GTKtoolkit 4.
