They also spend time wasting money on middle management bullshit, pet projects and horrible advertising in the west.
Most of the investment for the past few years for Kadokawa has been "appealing to the west" and none of the returns are seen for their domestic gains. Which is important for their studios and overall production.
So every time you see something become "popular" in the west. Any money that is actually generated only goes to the branch in said country that generated it, so that it can grow. Which sounds nice to stupid execs or shareholders in one way. But overall is detrimental to actual growth of the studios because they get less and less money.
It's why the headline for the past few Kadokawa reports goes as so
"Kadokawa reports loss, even though Re:Zero has soared in popularity!"
Meaning there is attention for the IPs still but the way it's all run is utterly horrible.
Like for every Dollar USD that I spend on anything every published for the US market. Only about 5-10 cents that actually ever gets to the creator. Same amount for the studio.
The rest is squandered and used so Crunchyroll can invite E-celebs, host dumb award shows in Japan, that don't invite Japanese creators. And also so they can do their "originals" which is just calarts bullshit with the veneers of "we like anime!"
Japan overall has been utterly stupid with their handling of cultural exports, even when it's fucking obvious people actually like it.
